A lot of times of how I memorize lyrics I just sing along with the video or audio several times until I have it down cold.

The reason for most of these is: new information is initially stored as short term memory, which is only stored for a few second to a few minutes. However if you rehearse that information and recall it enough, that then is converted into long term memories which can last forever. Also when it’s in your long term memory it will fade slowly unless you constantly rehearse it. What he was saying about needing to understand something is because long term memories can only be semantic encoding. Semantic encoding is the memory of something means, or your understanding of it. Acoustic and other types of information can only be short term memory. So you can’t remember something for a long time unless you constantly rehearse and understand it. Like so people can see.

I'm a spoken word and hiphop artist. Here are 2 things that work for me:

1. I use a stoplight system where I rate myself on how well I've memorized the lyrics. Red, not at all. Yellow, a little familiar but I struggle with memorizing most parts. Green, very familiar, almost memorized, but I still have to make a conscious effort to recite. 'Down cold' (blue) I can recite the entire piece after looking at the first line. My goal is to go from red to blue.

This also works with separate verses. I do it in chunks, not the piece as a whole.

2. When I've memorized the piece, I try to recite as fast as I can. Shortens practice time. Then when it's time to do on stage, i can slow down to focus on delivery and tone and inflections more than just rote memorization. The lines are always on the tip of my tongue.
