Probably had a lifter tick. Some people freak and think that ticks are knocks

Had the same problem with a motor we built for a race car.had a little low end rattle that went away. We used the motor the hole season of racing. When we pulled motor found the missing 10 mm socket everyone is aways looking for.

Cut open oil filter and see if you see metal shavings. If not, I would pretty much guarantee it's piston slap. My 5.3 sounds like it's about to throw rod in till it warms up, then runs like a top

That is super clean. Been apart before or someone changed oil often.

I had a clean engine that knocked. Very clean break from #4 piston skirt. It even had good compression and ran well. Until it doesn’t

Someone’s been inside it already aftermarket felpro upper intake gasket probably had a head gasket or
Knock sensor repaired but what a good deal !!

I’ve used that exact intake manifold gasket when I replaced my knock sensors, its the cheaper Fel-Pro brand. it’s meant to sit on top of the head bolts with those little flanges, the OE gasket clips to the intake.

That's how my Cadillac 4.9 V8 looks. I took the valve covers off at 130, 000 miles and everything there looked like it came from the factory. Endoscoped the cylinders and they're damn near spotless. Blew my mind lol.

when you check the lifters half of them will rattle. when you pick an engine out of a junkyard pick one out of vehicles that obviously got decommissioned due to a wreck. you don't want the motor out of the one with the perfect body, because it is the motor that's probably blown.

About 5 years ago, I bought a 1996 Ford ranger for $500. Perfect condition with a bad motor. Got a used motor. The motor happen to be new. Seems a person put a short block to solve a problem but heads we way out of spec. Had heads reworked, good to go.

I just did the cam bearing in my 5.3. First one I have ever done. It was not hard at all

thats the fresh air side why its so clean.., pull the other cover off and its a different world.

Early ls had carbon build up ontop of pistons that would cause a knock when cold. We did top end clean and injector cleaner on them.

Check the dog bone. Maybe starved oil. Or the o-ring on the oil pick up that bolts to the block. Still a great buy🎉🎉🎉

The reason it is so clean is because it’s one of those new motors with a sight glass window like a motorcycle so you can check the oil level
