In this video I show how your screwdrivers should be sharpened to fit the screws and avoid accidents on your most precious watch, as the one I'm using in this demo, my great-great-grandfather's Patek which he received as a gift from Napoleon (or so I was told).

I'm only into the hobby for a couple weeks, but my uncle sent me a package of old watches, mostly quartz, so I decided to use some of those for practice--no risk involved. Being so new, I have zero tools, so last weekend I took an eyeglass screw driver and filed the blade down until it fit the screws. Very crude, but it worked. Such an intriguing hobby, and thanks for this info!

This video blew me away. It is absolutely original. Now we have an insight into the everyday concerns of the conscientious watchmaker.

Hi Stian, I’m a newer subscriber and also a newer watchmaker, so these tutorial videos are extremely helpful! I would be super interested in a tutorial that shows your methods for polishing a watch; compounds you use, buffing wheels you use, what to use for certain finishes. Keep up the fantastic work!

Such a simple seeming aspect that us beginners just wouldn’t really know, thank you.

You always have great tips. I didn't know that the screwdriver wasn't supposed to bottom out in the screw groove. Makes perfect sense once it's explained! Thank you.

Thank you, thank you. So important. Pains me when I see on other, very popular videos the use of too small of a screwdriver. One can actually observe the destruction of the screws as a watch is being "restored". So yeah, your channel is very much appreciated!

Macro sharpening... I love it! As a (kitchen) knife guy, and a wood chisel guy, and a scissor sharpener, I can relate to this very muchly ;P. It's all about making your tools work as close to 100% as possible.

Good and to the point (no pun intended). I can't believe you used your rare and valuable quartz movement to demo, though!!

Thanks Stian, another great video full of info. I wondered how watchmakers fitted their screwdrivers. I done gunsmithing for some time and had occasion to fit many screwdrivers but they’re somewhat bigger .

I wasn't aware how very little I knew about screwdrivers. And every bit of information in the video was important. Thanks Stan.

Great video! Was waiting for this. What would be a really nice addition to make this video even more useful is to provide a european and US link to the tools used in the description :)

Some day I would love to see a video of all the marvelous tools you own. I was an electrician for over 40 years and had quite a collection of tools so I understand the addiction of buying the latest and greatest tools!!

Good to know and helps explain why I have had trouble keeping the screwdriver in the slot in the much larger sizes I come across working on antique engines, cars, motorcycles etc. Thank you

Hahaha, great work! Such a nice steady hand😅😅

Excellent! I’ve found that it’s all about what’s going on at the tip and the shaft isn’t so important. Any cheap brand of screwdriver is fine if the end is well honed.

I laughed at the end. But I learned a lot! thank you very much!

Really useful. I have done a bit of screwdriver grinding for screws on some old antique guns I have restored. Back in those days the screws had very narrow slots compared to the size of the screw and modern screwdrivers just don't fit. I have ended up making some replica antique screwdrivers.
