I literally measured my time to retirement by how many CPR and NRP recertification I needed.

My husband and I are both RNs and we do this ALL the time. Literally today my husband was talking about how he needs new tires on his truck, but the double time shift he picked up tomorrow will cover it.😂🤣

Exactly. I measure everything by how many hours that I would have to work to get it in a shift. This has given me the habit of placing value on my money. ❤ RN here.

100% accurate. I grew up with a nurse mom and if I wanted to buy something she’d let me know how many shifts of work she’d have to work to afford it

I was always grateful for the ability to pick up extra shifts.

Nurse, "You're death is only 2 shifts away"
Patient, "You off on the weekend?"

Bahahahaha It’s so true! The Military life is the same. We don’t go on vacation, we go on leave. We don’t go to the grocery store, we go to the commissary. We also do t place events in our lives by the year. Instead, we figure it out by where we were stationed!😂

The entire "It's going to cost me three shifts to purchase that item"... That's not nurse math... We grew up with that .. that's called poverty math when ur trying to figure out if your time is more valuable than the item.

I’m a cashier and my partner who’s is sales measure but shifts/hours! Let’s say for myself I make 15.97 an hour and need to pay 492 in rent I’d have to work a minimum of 30 hours just to make rent (company’s don’t want to give hours the more money you make) LETS ADVOCATE FOR MINIMUM HOURS AND NOT MINIMUM WAGE!! )

Growing up around nurses I can guarantee you this is 100% correct 😂😂

Soo true, I totally calculated my extras by how many extra shifts I had to work😂

I totally agree, I was always figuring out my finances by "oh, 1 or 2 extra shifts" lol

Omg same. I'm often like: should I buy this?..
Wait, that's the equivalent to working 3 full shifts. Nvm I rather save the money. 😂

I agree on counting money in shifts, but not holidays, maybe only when I go on vacation and I have 1 or 2 shifts left, but I've never counted a large amount of time in shifts.

Christmas only 30 ch CNA away lol but so true. We measure everything by shifts and paychecks lol

I do this. For example, I went back home to visit my family in Georgia a couple of days ago. But before my trip, I said to myself “OK I have three more shifts to go before I go back home.” it feels shorter that way lol.

I also use shifts to teach my preteen daughter what things cost.

I can relate. Just recently used nurse math to figure out that I only had to pick up 1 shift to pay off an unexpected car repair and that I would have some $$ left over 😊
