My Main Sharpening Setup

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Why I recommend Shapton Pro Stones?
Compared to the Naniwa Chosera line, you're getting a much better deal, almost less than half the price on some grits. Although the Chosera stones are thicker, the Shapton Pro stones are much harder, they will most likely have about the same lifespan. With Shaptons you don't worry about cracking issues, Both of my choseras have cracks. Shaptons are true splash and go, not a big deal. If you're a beginner the shapton pro is the way to go, because the base it comes with is already a stone holder, and container. Choseras can probably perform better with a larger variety of steels, but Shaptons excel at Carbon steel, and do decent with modernized steel.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Why this setup? I found that this setup was extremely versatile with kitchen knives, The Chosera 400 to repair minor damage and re-apex the bevel, the 2k Shapton Pro to sharpen, and remove the scratches from the Chosera 400, and to finish it off and refine the bevel, the Shapton Pro 5000 does an excellent job. Followed along with a strop with good compounds, excellent sharp edges every time.

I have the same combination except I have the Suehiro Rika 5000. The Shapton Pro 2000 is a most wonderful stone and I am completely smitten. You make a good point about the Chosera having the range of 400 to 800. The Shapton has an even bigger range I believe. Of the three the Rika has yet woo me but it's a relatively new stone for me. Thanks for your work.

Maybe too late, but fro anyone confused with Shaptons - Pro2k is close to 1, 5 realk grit, Chosera 400 i aroudn 600. This gives 2, 5x progression wich is quite fine with fast cutting Shapton

Naniwa may not do well soaked. However they are good at getting rid of burs on a sword or machete or knife.

Got a pro 2000 coming. My global knives aren't hard in the scheme of things so going above 2000 I didn't think necessary. But wanted something a bit above my 1000 grit global stone.

where can I get the dressing stone you’re using? also do you own anymore of the chosera stones? the 400 looks like a new pro because lack of a base. I was literally to buy my first set of stones, naniwa pro 400, 800, 3k but after hearing a lot of talk on the cracking issue I’m not so sure. it seems like the higher grit stones crack easier.
