A file guide makes it alot easier, it wont let you go too deep and puts the correct angle on top, and its alot easier to hold so your hand doesnt cramp so much.

Been doing that for over 40 years and can easily out pace a Electric sharpener. Files get dull just like chains and try to convince someone that doesn't understand that Until you try a new one against a used one. Buy quality Files

Give it back to your neighbor and re-borrow it next month, usually comes back sharp

Chain is not tight enough. On every file stroke the chain should not be lifted off the bar and leant over in direction of file travel.

Stupid question: how do you handle the burrs? Won't the edge fold over and dull faster like when sharpening knives without stroping?

Pro tips: Use quality files like Gorbet not cheap American crap. Pre load the file with soapstone to reduce clogging. Tap file on wood to empty cuttings. Roll twist quarter turn for even file wear. Set depth rakers for wood type. No need for silly guides or training bras some kits offer. Pay attention or pay cash.

What chisel is this? Round? Can you achieve that same sharp tip on a low profile chain?

Practice makes perfect! It takes some time to get use to the free hand. I do prefer this way of sharpening :)

Do i need to twist the file too or just back and forth

Absolutely. 5-6 swipes each. Takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Switched to square file chains a few years ago. It’s a pain to learn but once its figured out the cutting difference is well worth it.

If more people did that good of job. I wouldn't have to fix so many with my grinder. I've seen some interesting trys at it come through my shop.

If you file the tooth again and again you must take material off the front height tooth to continue to get good saw depth of cut . As you file the tooth it gets lower on the height tooth and you must file it too

Only takes a couple of Strokes to have it sharp what you're doing is this where in the chain down by this filing it down like like you used it for 3 years but all you did was filing for 3 minutes

Your not quite getting it fully sharp see that little gap between the top plate and your file is not supposed to be there. Could be sharper man keep practicing try again.

Put a magnet by your file to pull off the shavings or your tool will grind itself when you run it and those grits will get into everything.

Try telling that to my old logger boss lol, hed make fun of me and tell me I was too slow sharpening saws because I took the file away from the tooth before making my next pass... He said all the pro loggers drag the file, it doesnt dull it lol. I think he was just mad my 60cc husqvarna out cut his pro saws because he was always in a rush... Good things take time, and not dragging the file
