I've been trying to sharpen blades since I was a kid. Im pretty sure it was you who taught me what I was doing wrong. Im no longer embarrassed by the blades I sharpen.

I took what you said from your recent video about angle guides and improved my sharpening a lot. I figured out which guide actually put me at 15 degrees and I realized that was a much more natural angle for me to hold the knife at and I was able to stop using the guides completely. Of course that’s also in part due to I’ve been practicing every day for about two and a half weeks but getting down to an actual 15 degrees was very helpful and made my edges sharper. It’s pretty amazing how quick you can get good at sharpening if you just have the correct methods. Like you’ve said, perfect practice makes perfect.

I've found just cleaning those ceramic stones by rubbing then between your hands with soap and water works really well. Skin and soap...

I just got these items and within 30 minutes I had my blade popping hair right off my arm. I was able to take a hair and shave it into about 4 curly cues. My knife I just tried was the American lawman by Cold Steel in S35VN. There's still scratches from reprofiling the edges thinner but the cutting edge is very sharp. It just falls through printer paper. Thanks for the great vids.

If you regularly clean the dmt stone you'll find it cuts quite nicely once again. At the " break in" period of diamond stones the grit is actually pretty aggressive after that they could probably last a lifetime. I've had my 6" Extra coarse stone from 2013 and it's still rockin super aggressive cutting. I've had the blue coarse diafolds probably since 2010 and are still amazing cutters.

Thank you Alex as always! I find your videos very informative and simple and while personal application is difficult for me (Knives sharpen me, not the other way around), you always make me not lose hope in sharpening.

I got discouraged with stones cause I could never get a good edge, bought a work sharp knife and tool sharpener and I love it. Yeah I know it convexes the edge but you know what, sharpening all my kitchen knives in like 2 mins really helps and I don't notice a difference. One day I may pick up one of the spyderco stones and try my hand again but I'm at that age now where convenience trumps all.

I have the DMT plates x coarse thru fine and I do like them a lot. They are my main workhorse. Easy, effective, no maintenance and mine have kept their bite through years of sharpening - I guess you are a lot busier than I am. They are terrific for changing the bevel or reshaping. But for some reason they are not as much fun and somehow don't bring the same level of refinement as my waterstones.

When I was about 8, my mom bought a set of Japanese kitchen knives from a door-to-door salesman. My dad wasn't impressed, but they were really good knives. 10 years later, All I used was a steel sharpening rod on them and I could nearly feather tissues. This is a really good trick!.

Very nice, I have a similar, albeit somehwat extended set up. Coarse and medium diamond stones (EZ LAP) for reprofiling, spyderco medium stone for allround sharpening, spyderco fine stone for slight touch ups or honing, and 3 strops with fine, medium and coarse grit paste for either finishing, touching up thin blades, or maintenance of my serrated blades. Best set up I've ever had, I can get very good results with this.

Lapping fluid on your diamond stone will help a lot. Just FYI

I just got a DMT fine diamond stone and after a gift card, which I had no idea was on the account I got the thing for 15 bucks. Money left over for a strop!

for the ceramic stones/rods use green brillo pad and cleanser like ajax. they will clean up like brand new and you can especially tell on the white ones. thats what i do with them

I picked up the Spyderco medium and ultra fine ceramics and I've had a lot of success with them along with my strop. Always like your videos!

Good info! You can clean the Spyderco stones with kitchen cleanser, like Comet, a green abrasive pad and water. I have been wanting the Coarse type stone for a while -- I guess we must put up with them wearing out. I have all the Spyderco stones, and the triangle sharpener with fine stones.
