Oh how nice it is to have a legitimate well-educated doctor presenting this information!! Starting birth control as a teen was scary because I believed almost everything you mentioned. Luckily, I have a great gynecologist and for others there are resources like you out there!!

Thank you so much for this! I get very bad health anxiety especially around birth control and have been terrified based on the negative comments ive constantly seen online. This has really calmed me and I feel much more informed.

in my experience, I was on birth control for like a year and I did gain some weight (about 5-6 kg). As a child I was always naturally skinny and it was very hard for me to gain weight, even when I tried to eat more, but as soon as I started using birth control I was able to put weight on much easier and faster. I think that my weight gain was caused by two things: fluid retention and an increased appetite. In the beginning I noticed that I was bloated and "puffy" most of the time and that I had gotten heavier. This weight gain was probably not caused by fat but by water retention. But the longer I was on the pill the more and more I was graving food. At the time I was not aware of the fact that I was eating a lot... I mean A LOT. I always ate a lot more than most people of my age, but I stayed skinny. But when I was on birth control it felt like I was never full/satisfied and I was graving more unhealthy foods. Furthermore, I had less energy what caused me to move less. So the fluid retention, an increased appetite (in combination with a less healthier diet) and less movement is what caused me to gain weight. When I noticed these big chances I decided to stop taking the pill. It has been over a year now and it did change my body. When I stopped with the pill I did lose some weight at the beginning. This was probably "water" that my body was holding on to. When I started to eat more clean and move my body more I also lost the fat that I gained over the year. So, in my experience did birth control not cause weight gain directly (besides the water retention), but it increased my appetite and decreased my energy what over time led to weight gain. By the way I'm sorry if my english is bad, it is not my native language ;).

Lots of your answers say “not enough data” let’s not forget studies are very managed by companies and mostly women are educated to be quiet about most issues, I feel we k ow little and we endure too much. I’ve had depresión weight problems severe issues with all birth control

Reminder: People don’t make videos on their birth control experience if their experience is normal. So don’t freak out. Millions of people are on birth control and are fine. Including me. Just talk to your doctor

I personally have tried birth control pills at different dosages, the depo-shot, hormonal iud, the patch.. With all the above my feelings were wack; all super sad where my partner advised me off. I feel so done with any extra hormones. My body is good by itself. 😮‍💨

I'm really glad I'm seeing this from an actual doctor. I'm considering starting and I've just been freaked out by it!

thank you so much for this - it's so difficult to find good sources of information for a topic that's so important to women all over the world. This was incredibly informative and clear. Definitely helped me bust some myths! Thank you so so much :")

I just found this because I was considering going off of my pill, but I might stay on for a few more years. When I started taking it, I had a really rough time for the first 8 or so months. I was also starting a physically intense job at the same time so I'm sure that didn't help. I felt really sick all the time and lost weight, luckily only around 20 pounds, and my periods were so inconsistent because it was trying to fight the pill schedule. I was MISERABLE the whole time but once I finally adjusted to it, my weight leveled back out, bringing me back up 20, and I almost instantly felt relief. The only real "concerns" I have is with my emotions, and maybe libido but those aren't real issues for mine and my husbands situation. I have been taking a lower dosage to start with and each gynecologist I've been to so far has said I'm healthy! It was a huge game changer for me because my cycle was so incredibly painful and inconsistent, so it really is up to personal preference and medical history.

Thank you for providing excellent well supported and balanced information to young women. No such information was available 40 or 50 yrs ago and women were often reluctant to ask...and most ob-gyns were male.
I learn so much every time I listen to you.
I had a large teratoma (dermoid) attached to my ovary and both were removed at age 33.
For numerous reasons and only with privacy for research on Google, I never researched such until 40 yrs later. Very very grateful for you.

I love my IUD!! I’m still kind of concerned that it was 50% placed for the wrong reasons, and it worries me. But birth control is not to blame for bad/lazy doctors. I wouldn’t change my IUD for anything. It gives me freedom to plan my life the way I want it. 🥳 As always, thank you for all the wisdom Dr. Jen! 🥰

I'm still nervous to try it, but this did help ease some of my worries. I went through 6 months of Paragaurd and it was very traumatic for me. I switched to Kyleena and had to take it out only 6 days after I had it inserted because I couldn't walk from the pain. IUDs were definitely not for me. I'm so nervous to try the pill because of the side effects, but I really don't have another choice. I think I'm more nervous that I might be overly emotional from them and I don't want to put my boyfriend through me constantly crying again over nothing. It's really not fair to him to have to be my therapist all the time when I'm struggling to control my emotions because of my hormones being already so all over the place. Being a woman is so unfairly hard

Sadly my best friend is in the school of thought that birth control is “poison, ” I love her and it really concerns me. “It’s dangerous and ruins peoples lives and bodies” to which I responded “so do unwanted pregnancies.”

I’ve tried an array of bc pills, iud’s, and the nuva ring and always quit taking it because of how it effects my mood. I also always gain weight, 20-40lbs in 2-6 months. I’ve never taken anything longer than 6 months because I become so terribly depressed. This last time I tried doubling my antidepressant dose and added a second antidepressant and was still crying everyday. It really sucks because I have endometriosis.
