I love Jurmala - Lielupe, Bulduri, Dzintari. Besides Old Riga. I’ve been there in March, June and August - August is best!

"Saule" is also "the sun" in Latvian. Battle of Saule event is referenced or featured in local movies "The Pagan King" (Nameja gredzens) a feature film and "Baltic Tribes" which portrays local events through lens of enemy spy. A bit more like a documentary feature film. Nameja gredzens (The ring of Namey) has been quite an icon in Soviet times helping to spot fellow Latvian in exile. It was big no no to wear it in Soviet Union.

Šauļi or Šiauliai is city and region with deep meaning to ancient and modern eras of Baltic. Because of battle of Saule in Northern crusades, today this date is celebrated as Baltic unity day, as per decisions made by Latvian and Lithuanian parlaments in last decades.

And without tourist traps, good to hear! I'll be traveling to these three countries in two weeks and this video helps me a lot, thanks!

Vilnius was the capital of huge Lithuanian Empire. That's why it has a huge Old Town. Until the uprising of 1830-1831against the muscovian rule, Vilnius was bigger than Riga. The small Old Towns of Riga and Tallinn clearly show this. The German elites of former Livonia were loyal to the muscovian rule, and in the second part of the 19th century-beginning of 20th century the rapid development took place there. Riga and Tallinn expanded only then, not in medieval times.

The Statistical Office of Latvia reported that Vilnius has overtaken Riga in terms of population and is now AGAIN the largest city in the Baltic States (after a gap of almost 200 years); Vilnius - 615, 000, Riga - 605, 000.

One suggestion would be, find a local bathhouse. Not a sauna! Actual bathhouse with high humidity which is near the river bay. They are traditionally made with horizontal logs.

Hi guys, just found your channel as I’m heading to the Baltics later this year! Found your first tip really interesting as, like you, I’ve always just relied on wifi too when travelling, as part of the joy of travelling I feel is NOT being connected and contactable 24/7! However, at the end of my last trip, which was an epic 14 weeks, I discovered Airalo, which is a new semi company! I tried it for a week in the US, and it is super cheap, effective and easy to use. No more physical SIM cards to fiddle with or risk losing! Just thought you might be interested to know that for your next trip! Cheers from a fellow Aussie!
