With the ambitious goal of becoming the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050, the European Union has committed to creating a greener world for future generations. In this bold talk, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, details the challenges and opportunities that come with transitioning an entire continent to clean energy -- and shows why fixing climate change calls for everyone to take action.

These talks about environment have always a bittersweet taste: we are trying to solve the problem without addressing our economic system/lifestyle that is the cause of all of this. I know it's a very very very big shift but sooner or later we'll have to face reality

Almost everything is wrapped or bottled in plastic when we go to the market. Unless we make companies use glass and paper to pack what we can buy, there's a lot of unnecessary waste on what we don't even use. That's horrible. And the plastic foil can't even be recycled. We need to turn to sustainability and give up on greed (we don't even use everything we buy), thinking about having quality and not quantity, about durability and not cheap and easy to replace, about what give us purpose and value, not just chasing the latest trends. Just talking about it to gain sympathy isn't working. So, if Europe is so good at planning, I'd like to see what our authorities can actually do. Facts, not words. And more campaigns to educate, less for political gains.

so when will you have the guts to adress agriculture and food as one of the most important topics to achieve this goals... even if you become unpopular when you adress that we can not go on with how we produce food and how people should change what they are eating... Factory farming can't be in the future solution

I think the European continent is only continent that is actively working towards improving global climate change. other continents talk but Europe is the only continent taking action. They were broken after ww2, different needs and wants from different countries. Last 75 years they've changed it around. Much respect.

*Good move by Europe !*
Sustainability = sustainable business, profit, jobs, work, and stability.

Sustainability is also more efficient in the long enough timeline. Short term not, but long term very much efficient.

Having a set goal is good and important but unfortunately 2050 is too late!

Carbon neutrality, or having a net zero carbon footprint, refers to achieving net zero carbon dioxide emissions by balancing carbon dioxide emissions with carbon removal or simply eliminating carbon dioxide emissions altogether.

1. Consume less
2. Print CO2 footprint on all products!

Tell that to all the big companies. They’re the biggest pollutors. Not ordinary people. Yet something tells me it’s the ordinary people who will be asked to do the most and pay the most to make this a reality.

I am totally in favor of this, however it's nothing I haven't heard before. I would love to hear more actual ideas, or even examples, on how we could go about it, announcing tech, actions and so on.

My heating doesnt get used or turned higher then 18 degrees. I promote trees plants and animal well being. As a dog groomer i try to use environmentally friendly dog shampoo. I inform people to turm of their car and not leave it turned on when not needed. I dont buy new stuff from a shop i prefer to use second hand if possible. Forbthe future i hope i earn enough money to change from gas cooking to electric and from a petrol to an electric car. And i hope i do much more and will do much more in the future. it’s a bit ironic that her party (the CDU) has been denying to take actions against climate change for years and still now denies drastic actions to fight climate change (which is absolutely necessary)

The moment I watched this video and Ursula's presence I expected it to boom all over the world in few hours, but now I see people don't really care that much about climate change and future.

Please prohibit companies like Apple from soldering components to the motherboard of their computers. They can not be repaired if so

Dear Ursula I am all for it however as a EU citizen may I say that more carbon taxes for those who simply have no proper infrastructure and rely to drive just to get to a low paid job above minimum wage to hardly live and so that they can not benefit from retrofitting initiatives because they simply can't afford it is simply not a way forward. Just so you understand I currently have to wait 2 weeks for pay day just so I can afford to have my elbow most likely broken looked at. The only other choice would be to take the 100 Euro out of the food budget and for me and my son not to eat the next two weeks. These are daily challenges absolutely normal people nowadays have to make but should never be normal because they are not normal! My parents would turn in their graves if they saw what living in the EU has become. For a start, I challenge the EU to make all energy green and free for every EU citizen!

As much as I want to support this message this sounds like a corporate message "Yes, we definitely want to better the environment (and have no ulterior motives whatsoever)." Whatever the reason is that they want to better the environment now, I highly doubt they won't use it to take more political power for themselves and make the world less democratic in the process.
