MAGNESIUM and GALLIUM REACTING to LASERS #asmr #science

I decided to test which element visually looks the coolest when engraved with a Fibre laser with a 1064nm frequency. The results were incredible and I think Silver gets the first place prize for the green color it gives off. Should I try Uranium or Plutonium next? The 3 elements used were:

1. Ga - Gallium
2. Mg. Magnesium
3. Ag - Silver

The elements used in our previous short were:
1. Al - Aluminium
2. Nb - Niobium
3. Cu - Copper
4. Zr - Zirconium
5. Bi - Bismuth
6. Sn - Tin
7. V - Vanadium
8. Zn - Zinc
9. W - Tungsten
10. C - Carbon
11. Fe - Iron
12. Cr. Chromium
13. Mo - Molybdenum
14. Ti - Titanium
15. Co - Cobalt

Because silver reflects light better than any metal… and maybe natural element?

I’d really like to see you laser a black oxide coated silver piece, and see if the removal of oxide with a laser would leave a mirror finish or at least a very reflective one

Gallium:AGHH-
Magnesium and silver: yo huge shoutout to my barber

That gallium can absolutely ruin that surface if it's made of aluminium

Silver has the highest refractive index of any element. Don't use that on silver you're risking damage to your equipment

Haha, there goes that plate now with the gallium on it

Silver is both super reflective and very good at dispersing heat. In combination, this makes it super hard to generate the level of concentrated energy delivery necessary for cutting with a laser.

Silver requires a different Lazer frequency before it energizes enough to engrave

The silver reflects the laser light too much. It is highly reflective. I used laser welding machines in the jewelery industry before. To get a suitable weld you have to darken the surface by using a sharpie or something similar.

The laser isn't focused on the much taller block. These laser etchers don't just fire a laser straight at something. They shoot it through a lens which focuses the energy to a pinpoint. If the item is too high or too low, the laser isn't focused on it, and doesn't etch

Magnesium haircut silver made it radioactive gallium melted its self

Silver oxide and the polished surface combined reflect the light in scattered directions, kind of like radar absorbing paint but for light.

I think its because its very reflective

Because gallium has such a low melting point that it can liquefy in your hand and the others have higher melting points

Gallium can already melt in your hand from your body heat so that wasn’t very surprising, also doesn’t magnesium only react when exposed to moisture?

Lasers are still light, and light gets reflected.

Laser gets reflected from silver cube... Make it the same rough surface as Ga and Mg cubes...😊

Because silver burns green, but only along the side did enough of the silver burn to overpower the light of the laser.

Silver is the best metal for conducting heat. I guess that is the reason. Doesn't allow it to heat up properly to clear the surface layer. It dispersed the heat too quickly.

its a conductivity thing silver is the most conductive metal which means it also disperses heat very well

I think the oxidation layer protects the silver

First u hit the edge of the silver block where its shiny, no rust

Thats where it glows green

And once u hit the oxidisation layer, its not strong enough to make it glow green, but it melts it back to normal silver
