Hey friends! In this video I'm talking about what gatekeeping is and why people do it in MMOs and more specifically in New World. It's not as bad as most people make it out to be!

I can't wait to see what you have to say!

Enjoy!

xoxo Ashley

I too once thought the gate keeping was toxic until I did it and finally understand why you need an optimized build

Endgame raiders: why isnt there more ensgame content
Also endgame raiders: rather than helping players get into endgame content, weve arbitrarily pulled the ladder up behind us, locking out 95% of the playerbase. Now were upswt because we dont have enough people to raid with, and the devs see endgame content as a waste of development respources because so few players are consuming it.

What an incredible video you’ve made, perfectly articulated! No one person has more of a right to content than the other, but certain criteria must be met of course!

Think it’s important to mention companies on smaller servers can gatekeep for selfish and toxic reason.

We had two companies on our server eat up our limited pool of raiders and 90% of their runs are in house unless you pay them some gold. It’s extremely difficult to get a HoG going without help from those two companies and both have a vested interest in not helping other people to keep the gear advantage.

Just to end this, we have other companies who are pushing HoG and it’s slow as we try to avoid our better players getting poached but it’s going. Our server is also growing so we are finding more players getting to endgame, just didn’t see this point get brought up because it’s very real issue on smaller servers

I don't think gatekeeping is inherently bad, my issue with it is how people go at it. In my server for example, most organizers don't ask for gear-links, they ask for proof of completion, meanwhile big PVE companies charge a hefty fee to straight up carry players; this means there's people out there who have no idea of how things are done taking the place of other's who might fare better if given a chance. Of course, those players can always start their own groups, not doing so is entirely their issue. Personally I believe people should tone the gatekeeping down a bit, if we really enjoy this game, it would be wise not to sabotage it, at the end of the day New World isn't the most skill-demanding game out there, taking a noob or two shouldn't jeopardize the run, and if does... then some of those gatekeepers are noobs themselves.

I appreciate you making this video. I agree that those who exclude for no reason are part of the issue. I also believe those who join random lobby's, where there are a great number of newer players trying to learn the ropes via m1s, only to berate the newbros while staying silent on ways to improve is also a bit toxic.
I will continue to join randoms to learn the ropes, I just wish more people who know what they are doing would be a bit more helpful in teaching those who are learning.
Of course, it is also toxic to be a newbro who refuses to learn from their mistakes... In my opinion.

@AshShley carried me through my first raid. Before that, I just stared at recruitment waiting for someone to teach me.

I always described gatekeeping as a spectrum. I find the people requiring people running gorgon to have 710+, and/or only running the bleeding edge of meta (rapier & IG), and/or have the most perfect gear so they can run 5 con, etc. to be rather silly and toxic. I have had numerous successful runs where no one fell into those categories, sure it could have gone faster, but It certainly wasn't needed for success. Some things are fair like asking for trophies and consumables and ~700 GS. But there are levels of absurdity.

I find the toxicity tends to be in the really extreme requests. In my eyes it is all about being fair with the request given the content. If its an M1 (or even M2), the bar is lower than gorgon, and of course something like wurm which has very specific needs, that's where it is understandably strict.

Two weeks into the RuneScape Christmas event. No black partyhat. One step forward, ten steps back. 🙃

Checking the gear score and gear and stuff is not the man issue. It's not letting people play because they don't know the mechanics because no one ever invites them to play because you haven't done it before. It's like if you don't clear the new content in the first 2 weeks of it being released you completely miss the boat.

My server, Nysa EU, there are a couple of guys that run beginner groups for the Hive, Kudos to them to take the time out to teach people. (They do this for free and not a paid for carry raid).

My feelings are if its a normal pve run or something that isnt as important as progression there should be some room for odd builds and such but when it comes to progression and achieving something that might be more stressful there is a place for the correct type of gatekeeping. If people want to cry then they need to understand they are not on the same page as others meaning more issues have a chance to appear especially if others have done runs together but they are new to a group that has already run together and learned at least on some level their roles and what others do. I might be harsh but a lot of people are stupid when it comes to group content and still thinking of themselves as a single person and not as an achievement for the group.

When in doubt, just blame the bow user.

i do think vetting before a raid is necessary but (this is just personal experience) i got gatekeeped when i did not have gear from the run itself. i understand the need for it but some people take it to far and that is what i see as gatekeeping.

I cant mention how many times ive had to role swap during raids in WoW just so our guild can meet progression and sacrificing what i want to do most so that we can get to a point later to do what roles we want to as well. There is an end to the madness people just need to understand sometimes the hurdles may take awhile.

On our Valhalla server, those gatekeeper ask 200k gold from 5 people who want to join the Sandworm raid. This group earns 1 million gold per Sandworm raid. This is the ultimate form of gatekeeping. so Toxic

Someone give me a valid excuse of why musket isint considered good in PvE. I swear i out DPS all the bow users and never once have any downtime on shooting. Shooters stance is OP in PvE i tried Bow but it hits like a wet noodle compared to my musket
