How Uber Matches Riders With Drivers - Who Gets Assigned To Who?

Have you ever gotten a ping, headed to the pax's destination and then, all of a sudden, you get a completely new ping to a completely new rider? It's weird - but not that uncommon, depending on the size of your city. So how does Uber decide to pair drivers and passengers? RSG contributor Joe breaks down what we know about Uber's pairing algorithm.

You owe your thousands of viewers transparency. You’re the most pro Uber channel out there. You appear in videos for Uber, Interview the CEO, make media appearances on what appears to be their behalf. Do you guys have a deal with Uber?

Not only is this genius for all of the reasons you described, it also puts less stress on drivers trying to out maneuver one another for rides as it utilizes every position collectively. This is the part of the business Uber is actually incredibly good at because they invest so heavily on the tech side of things. As for us drivers, we are all desperate fools risking our lives for unappreciative passengers and a corporation that we are nothing more than a number to.

He forgot to mention that Uber is constantly trying to find ways to maximize the money they make, and to minimize what the drivers make!

By the way, this information is literally meaningless to every driver.

Unless you know where every potential rider is located, then I cannot see how this information benefits any driver!

When you receive a ride request, you either accept it or decline the request...simple!

By the way, if Uber has this this big team of "special" engineers working on all of this high tech efficiency, then why does their customer service line totally suck!

Also, just as an experiment, accept an Uber Eats order, and then try to actually "arrive" at the restaurant location, so that the clock starts ticking!

You will find that the location that you are directed to by the Uber GPS navigation will actually never be the actual restaurant!

Instead the Uber navigation will indicate that you have arrived when you are many times not actually at the restaurant, or basically some distance away, which varies based upon my analysis and investigation.

I once had to walk 1/8th of a mile, just to get the Uber navigation to indicate that I had arrived!

High tech efficiency at work, but remember, your time does not start until you arrive!

Another example of high tech efficiency...A driver receives an Uber Eats request, and arrives at a restaurant to pick up an order.

Unfortunately the high tech system had already assigned the same order to another driver who has already picked up the order! Huh?!

Yes, Uber sent you to a restaurant to pick up an order that does not exist any longer.

The first driver picked up the order, and then canceled the delivery after leaving with the food.

Uber's high tech and efficient system then sends another delivery request to another hapless driver, who arrives to find out that there in not a second order to pick up, because Uber did not ask the restaurant to re-create the order! They just sent a driver on a fool's errand!

The driver then has the privilege to deal with the crappy Uber customer service, who will tell the driver that he will not be compensated for driving to the restaurant at his expense, only to find that there was no order to pick up! Huh?!

Yes, to add insult to injury, the high tech Uber system that sent you to pick up a non existent order, will not compensate you a penny for all of you wasted time!

Don't believe any of these stories about high tech efficiency, especially when it comes to Uver!

Lyft is ridiculous, they send rides as much as 25 minutes and 15 miles away.

This is total recieved a ping 11 minutes away from a pax that was rated 4.96 that was going on a 7 min trip....the area was flooded with drivers on a busy saturday of a hundred drivers was closer than me and the pax was rated good so it was not a problem did uber make them is more than your explanation that goes into thier dont want you to know

I've actually had a passenger in my car when they requested, and then they end up getting a driver that's 5-8 minutes away.
I have dropped them off at a small shop, at a very slow time of the day. I told her I had time that if I got another run I would have to leave but you can always request and get a ride.
she ended up finishing her shopping much more quickly came out hopped in the car she requested the trip right in front of me and then ended up being paired with the driver 8 minutes away.
I've had this happened both ways to me numerous times. I'm driving down the road 5 or 8 minutes away I get a pang at a local hotspot, pull into the front and there's an Uber sitting right there still waiting for passengers he's a friend of mine so I asked him? He was sitting literally in front of the building for the ping came from and I got it instead.
I agree with your explanation of why they do this however the implementation of it does cause some issues for drivers and perplexes passengers to.

This is interesting.

Uber is almost certainly amending it’s trip request matching algorithm or algorithms occasionally or frequently. They may use one complex algorithm in every city, or choose from a variety of algorithms, for a particular city. Uber seems to experiment with different methods from time to time, to gain statistics about what works best, presumably to profit more ... something they don’t seem good at.

It’s likely that Uber has experimented with using not just routings (the computed route duration to pick up), but also ratings (comparing the Rider’s star-rating with the nearby Drivers’ star-ratings), and even making high rated Riders wait a little longer for a high rated driver (who probably has a more preferable car). However, depending upon amounts of Driver supply and Rider demand (trip quote enquires - not necessarily actual trip requests) at any given time, the algorithm(s) probably work differently. That’s what drives Surge pricing.

It’s complex! One thing seems certain: to make profit, Uber will have to charge more for trips. This should result in Drivers earning more too. Uber Drivers live in hope of that. 🚙

WE get paid ZERO on our way to rider. This is an immense ripoff. Uber drivers working time and mileage for free. Independent contractor loophole needs to be closed.

It’s a roll of the dice 🎲 in my opinion. Even if you have someone get in your vehicle you don’t always get them when you’re the driver. Great video though as always.

Uber has been better of late. Lyft needs to step up their game

I feel like this doesn't work cause I keep getting request that are 12-15 minutes away from me and by time I get close they cancel or it's a short trip and they only going down the street and only get $3.00 for the trip

Very interesting! It does sound more efficient than the original method.

Have noticed the changes...many passengers tell me I was waiting for another driver but then my driver changed to you.

In my opinion they're spreading out the business so every driver will make $17-$20/HR. I've had passengers tell me several times that they had to cancel multiple times to get a closer driver so they didn't have to wait. Anyone else agree?

Have you noticed how passengers who request an UberX are now being asked if they would join a shared ride with no stops, making them no longer UberX but pool passengers, offering them a dollar in Uber credit, and in some cases no added passengers are allowed from the original UberX requester.

It feels to me that this system has been on in Minneapolis for at least 9 months

You seem to prefer lyft. I’m wondering why you use Lyft more. The only advantage I see is that I could use Lyft to drive across country and Uber I can only use in the State I signed up with. I’ve only driven for Uber thus far.

Simple, pax has a low rating on Uber, I make that choice to pick them up if I want or decline Trip. Every Market is different btw! Also, LYFT is the devil and this video was useless

And one reason after 4 1/2 years as a lyft driver...i have now made Uber my go to app while driving.

BS! They choose who should have what ride based on how much money you have made. I don't get the good rides hardly ever anymore. They spread it out to make sure everyone is making the hourly rate they want you to have. And the better rise are given to the newer drivers within that batch matchup. I have been doing it for two and a half years and I have definitely noticed the difference. That is what the real matchup is about, controlling everyone's money and spreading out the quest rides to force people to work the entire time of the quest so you can't knock them all out quicker. The explanation you gave was just a way to make it seem like it's a benefit to us. Nothing they do is a benefit to us. It is only a different way to screw the driver PERIODTTT! You must work for the Rideshare companies....
