Here's a few things that need to be done.
Passengers:
Need to provide a verified photo of their face via app (just like us drivers do)
Need to provide their ID (just like us drivers do)
Background check (just like us drivers do)
Need to provide their actual name. (just like us drivers do) Not some random nickname of their choosing.
Need to link a real debit/credit card to the account. Not one they can purchase from a Walgreens

Precautions on both ends could help prevent some of the terrible events that have happened. How many times does something bad have to happen in order to enact change?

I would also recommend one other thing - add something where the rider and driver must confirm in app that these checks were made before the app allows the driver to start the ride. There could be check boxes next to the plate, vehicle and driver info. Once these boxes are checked, there is a final button in green that says “Authorize Ride”. Once the rider slides that button, the driver is able to start the ride. It proves the rider confirmed all information for their proper vehicle and driver and the driver was at the proper pickup location.

This is an excellent video and necessary reminder, but it needs an adjustment.

The rear license plate should be focused on. Many states only require one plate, usually a rear plate. The rear plate is the one most likely checked by law enforcement and observed by other motorists.

This video should be an ad that displays prominently on YouTube and as a national ad for television and cable broadcast.

When I searched “uber” on YouTube, this channel did not appear. I had to type the video title to find this video - and I’m a subscriber. I only saw the video because I received the email advising me of its existence.

I've noticed a lot more college students in my market checking the plates now, and looking at the side of the car for the model name. The message is getting out. Please require riders to have a real name and photo for the drivers safety as well.

I’m a Uber driver and I can’t tell you how many times people tried getting into my car and they weren’t the passenger. There was 1 time when I wasn’t even on duty and not even in the right car and a couple tried getting into my car lol

I've completed 1, 171 rides now in the past 6 months. I like it when my passengers call me by name in order to verify identity unfortunately we go to make a blind pick up based on a first name only. Often the passenger is a boyfriend or girlfriend of the account holder so the information uber has is useless to the driver on the call. I've also noticed that many passedgers just walk up to my car and attempt to open the doors...mine are always locked and I must push the button to unlock the doors and hatchback. Uber needs to come up with better ways to add to drivers safety. I enjoy driving for uber and just want to stay safe and deliver my passengers without incident.

This is good but passengers are lazy (or intoxicated) and won't take the time to do the license plate check.
So ALL drivers need Uber beacons. That way the color of the light on the beacon (which is tied to the DRIVER app) changes to match the color of the screen in the PASSENGER'S app. ie: passenger's screen turns orange when they are notified their driver is arriving, so they look for the vehicle with the orange Uber beacon to let them know that that's their Uber.
BTW, Uber should charge a $25-$50 refundable deposit on the Uber beacons to help keep them off of Ebay/Amazon.
