Everyone who visits the BIG ISLAND should definitely visit a little known gem-of-a beach in the Pahoa/Puna area. It is a black sand beach nestled down in a cove surrounded by volcanic cliffs. There is a rock stairway to get down to the beach, or you can enter via a less steep path through a rustic opening on the opposite side of the beach. The beach is not marked, but it is known as KENENA BEACH. There is some parking but also a neighborhood across the street where many park cars and walk across the road to enter the beach. This beach is phenomenal and often has drummers, dolphins, and whale sighting (seasonal). (additionally, nearby attractions are Uncle Roberts market, and hot ponds beach area...so, there is more to do in the area when you venture to this beach).

Be careful with swimming at Ho’okena, it can be dangerous. For the to-do list: I would add ice-cream in Hawi, loco moco in Hilo, and coffee in Waimea (Waimea Coffee Company). Also, shave ice in Kawaihae, Pizza in Pahoa (Pele's Kitchen) and Punalu'u Bake Shop in Naalehu.

The big Island is just that. It's big. We've been going there for 30 something years. First time we camped at Namakani Paio in Volcanoes park, we were going to stay a few days &wound up staying for 3 weeks. So much to see and we met people who are outdoor types as we are. We would take our coffee making stove, cups etc. over to the picnic area around 6am & drink our coffee and watch for the flock of nene to fly over on their way to Volcano village where they get fed. We'd often hike to the Volcano House for breakfast, hike back to work off the calories. We've been on every hike
in the park. We did take the earliest helicopter ride once & there was an outbreak so that was great. Once is plenty. We went to Merrie Monarch maybe 7 or 8 times. That's the Hula Olympics & it takes a lot to get tix, but for hula dancers it is fabulous! Don't try to see the whole place in one or 2 days. Just plan more than one trip there.

One error in this video. Only 61 people killed in the Tsunami to strike Hilo, not 200, 000.

The tsunami killed 120, 000 people? Five times the population of the entire area? Yeah.
