WHAT IS MIRENA ?

1. WHAT IS MIRENA?
Mirena is a small plastic hormone containing intrauterine contraceptive
device. It contains a hormone Levonorgestrel in its stem.
2. HOW DOES IT WORK?
Mirena is inserted inside the uterus. It releases small amount of
hormone daily inside the uterus which causes thinning of the
endometrium (internal lining of the uterus), hence preventing pregnancy
from happening.
3. WHEN AND HOW IS IT INSERTED?
It is generally inserted immediately after menses are over. Insertion is a
simple OPD procedure. It is inserted using a special insertion device.
Anesthesia is usually not required. A painkiller injection is given before
the procedure.
4. IN WHAT OTHER SPECIAL CONDITIONS CAN MIRENA BE USED?
Apart from Birth control (contraception), Mirena can also be used in
cases of heavy menstrual bleeding like adenomyosis, fibroids uterus,
endometrial hyperplasia, hormonal or idiopathic Abnormal uterine
bleeding. It is also used in cases of endometriosis.
5. WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS/ SIDE EFFECTS OF MIRENA?
Mirena is a very effective long term method of contraception with very
less failure rate. As Mirena causes thinning of endometrial lining, there is
significant reduction in blood flow during menses after Mirena insertion.
After 1-2 years, the menses may stop completely or present only as
spotting. This resumes after removal of the device. It may take around 3
months for the device to adjust in the body after insertion, during which
irregular off and on bleeding can occur. There are no major side effects
like infection, heavy bleeding, pain, discharge etc. seen with copper.
6. WHAT IS THE DURATION OF ACTION OF MIRENA?
Mirena is effective for 5 years after insertion.
