Learn what Mirena is in this Howcast video about birth control.

Probably my favorite or one of my most favorite forms of birth control is the IUD, and the Mirena IUD is definitely one of my top two favorites. The Mirena IUD is a small T-shaped device that I insert, or a nurse practitioner inserts in the office, and that T-shaped device has progesterone in it. Now this form of birth control lasts up to five years. While it is in your uterus, it has the same effectiveness as tying your tubes, with the option to change your mind. So, in other words, if you're worried about the effectiveness of the Mirena, you shouldn't worry.

IUDs, in general, are the most effective forms of birth control available. While it is effective now, it has no impact on your fertility in the future.

If you're thinking about using the Mirena as a form of birth control, call your doctor or nurse practitioner and make an appointment to discuss your birth control options. Don't worry, if you haven't been pregnant before or you've never given birth to a baby before, this is still an effective and safe form of birth control for you.
