Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, primarily covering the first half of the book. Set in the far future, it follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

The film is the third adaptation of Dune following David Lynch's 1984 film, which was a critical and commercial failure, and John Harrison's 2000 miniseries. After an unsuccessful attempt by Paramount Pictures to produce a new adaptation, Legendary Entertainment acquired the Dune film and TV rights in 2016, with Villeneuve signing on as director in February 2017. The writers incorporated an updated 21st-century sensibility into the script, including increasing the prominence of female characters. Like the two-part film It (2017), production contracts were only secured for the first film, relying on its success before a second film would be greenlit. Filming took place from March to July 2019 at locations including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi.

Dune premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021. Warner Bros. Pictures theatrically released it in 2D, 3D and IMAX internationally on September 15, 2021. It was simultaneously released theatrically and streaming on HBO Max on October 22, 2021. It was generally well received by critics for its visuals, scope, and ambition, and has grossed over $331.1 million worldwide on a production budget of $165 million. A week after its domestic release, Dune: Part Two was confirmed with a planned release in October 2023.

My biggest complaint with the new films is not having Alia born and not having her kill Baron Harkonnen. The 1984 movie made that character so creepy.

Dune doesn't get enough credit for setting the stage of the modern science fiction. The true "space opera" that we all came to love in the 90s and 2000s. I doubt mass effect would even exist if it wasn't for this.

Paul's first son Leto was killed during the Imperial raid on Sietch Tabr. The next film is going to be mostly based on Dune Messiah. Without Chanity, Paul finds himself dealing with his worst fear . The fear is due to Paul's visions of a series of future events which lead to the Golden Path. Due to his fear of the Golden Path, Paul forgets that his son Leto 2 is at the center of the Golden Path. Leto 2 is name after his grandfather Leto 1

Dune 1 and 2 were amazing.
Dune 3 will be fantastic entertainment.
The dune saga of books imho could never be completely or faithfully reproduced in a film format

I disliked what was done to Stilgar's character far more than Chani. In the book he was practical, a leader and Paul's superior when he was just another foot soldier of the fremen. He made a deal with Paul in the first book, he would help Paul become emperor and Paul would turn dune into a paradise. He was not the gullible emotional true believer shown in the films. Chani's changes make more sense, the books were written decades ago and while advanced for the era there were still certain assumptions regarding women that are just awkward. That said this is still hardly a feminist manifesto, given the focus on women as incubators of the next generation.

In Dune 2 Chani was used to visually represent Paul's mental struggle with his role as a Freemen God. In the book it was in his head, so in movie they had her do it. This can be resolved with a few minutes of dialog at the start of the movie, with some of the great lines from book 1 about Pauls mother never married the Duke but he loved her the most and Irulan will never know his bedchamber and suffer as a cloistered nun.
Spoilers ahead, read only if you know the books.They can have Chani lead the Jihad to create paradise or have her just hide out in the South raising babies. Shaddam can still kill Leto the first, to introduce his revolt from his exile, and Irulan can still be the poisoner. They can have Alia grow faster than normal if they want, so she can be 19 years old instead of 12, make things legal, or just back up the timeline to have had her born but never seen in Dune 2. Without navigators they can just hide the coinspiracy with a mechanical device from Ix or have the planet Tupol be invisible to Paul because of some geology invention and the coispiracy hides itself there....I expect a lot of violent space battles not in the book as the Jhad spreads to other planets and maybe being lead by Saddam. The books did not ever say what happened to Margot Fenring's child, only hinted that the Bene G had another and he should have fled into the scattering and his story revealed in the never written book 7, so there is a whole plotline to invent there as well, along the same theme as King Author's bastard child Morderd. Lady Fenring should be an Atreides right?, so why not make her a secret sister of Paul, a child of Lady Jessica from before she went off with her Duke. This Morderd Bastard could lead the revolt of the rebel houses.
Someone hire me to write this
Messiah is a short story, and Children of Dune is not that long either. A good writer could smash them way they do stuff today, they could just skip Alia and the Ghola all together and shove most of the whole plot theme of Messiah in the prelude before the initial credits, Alia as a short story but save the Coinspiracy and the stone cutter disaster to run along side the growth of the twins and Dune 3 could really be Children of Dune. Now that would just blow everyones mind! I could write that one too....

Chanis character makes no sense and i cant stand Zendaya.
Chani:"We need you to come South and help lead us"
Paul resentfully gives in and realizes to assume the role is the only way he can help the Fremen and avenge his father.
Chani after: "This isnt over, your not Fremen"
Neither are you as i recall your mother was originally an Imperial(might be the dad in the books cant remember)
I just hope they dont ruin the series with a "strong independent woman dont need no man" rant.

Paul never bought into the idea that he was a hero or saviour. He struggled with the idea people worshipped him so it's his son Leto II that assumes the position his Dad didn't want. It's not realistic to expect that a director stick exactly to the story. I like Villeneuve's interpretation.
