In this video we check out some significant tranmission damage as a result of an abused system all together. "Bang shifting" or "power shifting" has its perks situationally but eventually all things must come to an end when the abuse is too great.

Join me as we walk through this particular case and discover how certian part failure can result in different symptoms felt by the rider.

Enjoy!

This is far and away the best explanation out there on the topic of shifting. Period. All riders need to see this.

I have only ever power shifted a few times. I had an 81 kz750 with a frozen clutch, and that was the only way to test drive it. It seems easier to power shift if you rev high and with pressure on the shift lever, you let off the throttle entirely and the lever will usually move. Thanks for showing the aftermath!

Brilliant and so informative Cody - as usual! Understanding how the gearbox/transmission works is my nemesis.

Huh. I accidentally learned how motorcycle transmissions work today.
Thanks, algorithm.

Fantastic video, by the way. Real good stuff here.

I appreciate this video man. I was taught power shifting when i got my first bike and I quickly decided it was not good. I feel like doing that for a couple weeks has caused some serious problems with my transmission. I'm scared to even know what's going on in there. I'm hoping the problem isn't the transmission, but it doesn't seem to be the clutch. It has a clanking noise accelerating in first and second gear, and slightly in third, and mostly under load while accelerating and the clutch is not engaged.

I’m glad I know this. I used to to clutchless shifting all the time, not constantly but like try to do it from time to time because my guts tells me that it is not a good idea, because if it’s designed to clutchless shift then it wouldn’t include a clutch kit to begin with. Thanks for this affirmation.

This makes me worried for my own transmission, I wish there was a way to look at it without taking the whole thing apart

I wish you could work on my 2007 Honda CR450R Transmission. It shifts just fine but make a strange noise every time I shift. When the bike is off and I shift through the gears I don’t hear anything.

I only have issues with 4th gear sometimes it will engage properly sometimes it wont. It wont slip out of gear it will just feel like a delayed shift. Every other gear engages perfectly it's only 4th I have issues with. The bike is a 2024 honda cb125f my daily bike i dont know what's causing this to happen but I'm starting to worry that it may be damaged in some way.

Power shifting, are you meaning clutchless ?? Gearboxes have always been a weak point for me. Not that Ive had problems and needed to work on them. However this was a good vid for me for a better understanding of how they work. Thank you Cody.

Nice information, and video, one topic you did not mention was "under-cut-gears" do you think you could touch on that part of machining/massaging gear dogs? Peace

Will wearing the dog's cause the oil to go silvery? My 5th gear is starting to pop out. I've never used the clutch while changing gears. 13000kms on the bike

I'd want to ask if downshifting with the clutch partially pressed is a problem as big as doing it clutchless. This question comes because I'm a relative new rider and yesterday I tried to put just one finger on the left lever as I do with the other hand on the brake. I'm not 100% sure to completely disengage the transmission/engine, because I cannot control the exact amount of pression I put on it. So, in case I'd be still in the friction zone of the cluch, my gearbox is soffering? I'm asking just for the downshifting and for completeness I manually blip the throttle in the meantime because it "sound" smoother. Am I doing something wrong for my transmission? Many many thanks.

I've got a 1985 kawasaki what in 1st its very still to roll the bike with the clutch in, I can barely shift into 2nd and if I shift into 3rd gear it becomes like neutral. Would that be the transmission or the clutch?

Just got my 450 and I’m having a similar issue should I rebuild the full trans or just some of the parts

About to split the case on my 400ex. I have to figure out why it's popping out of 3rd gear. This was very helpful to know what kind of issues to look for
