How coincidental, I came up with a formula for the integral of 1/(ax^2+bx+c) wrt x today.

I = 1/sqrt(b^2-4ac) (ln(x-r1) - ln(x-r2)) + C, where r1 is -b/2 + sqrt(d)/2 and r2 is -b/2 - sqrt(d)/2

Don't you get 6/7 as the coefficient of arctan? Since you have to divide by sqrt(7)^2 in the numerator and denominator of the integral to get the desired form in the denominator.

My years of diffeq taught me to complete the square to find it in the lookup table (Lagrange)

Can we not use partial fraction decomposition?

the quad eqn has complex roots so can be broken into linear factors with each factor containing complex roots then easily do partial fraction

Can someone explain to my why sometimes when completing the square you will leave the 7 in this equation on the right side and not bring it back to the left vs keeping everything on the left I’ve had problems with either answer being correct but never understand when one is correct over the other in this one I can only assume it’s because it’s going back under the 6 so you wouldn’t want that kind of notation underneath since it wouldn’t make sense
