In *Greek* literature, Penelope is the clever wife of Odysseus who remains faithful to him for twenty years while he is traveling all over doing god knows what.

Odysseus is presumed dead (and therefore not available to be her husband), and she is expected to be entertaining potential suitors, but she does not actively pursue this for a long time. The most she does is eventually start manipulating all of the suitors to prove themselves worthy of marriage while making up stories about how she *will* choose a husband as soon as happens. So she is manipulating the marriage mart for her own amusement, so to speak.

She keeps herself entertained by this until Odysseus returns home in disguise, pretending to be someone he is not. She suspects he is lying and is in fact Odysseus but makes him prove himself worthy to be her husband, and in doing so, he accidentally reveals himself to have been Odysseus all along.

Then, even though he is now admitting who he is, she believes it is too good to be true that Odysseus came back to her, so he has to prove it to her again through one more test.

I just think that story is very interesting. 😂

Also, the etymology for the name is believed to be a combination of Greek words that means “cunning weaver whose motivation is hard to decipher”.

I earnestly believe that Colin only left because he realized that he had feelings for Pen. Well... subconsciously. He was in awkward feeling/denial phase and therefore left when those feelings overcame him. In fact, whenever he came close to Pen, he felt the sudden urge to run. (Yet when he's away, he wants to be close, I wonder why that is.) He doesn't know what he's feeling, but he IS feeling it. It just feels too natural to him to be anything as scary and beyond as love is said to be, and yet it's somehow more.
Move forward to season 2: Colin comes back, has forsworn women except Pen because Pen does not count. He texted her, he felt like he could truly find himself and he became that and focused only on their relationship and himself overcoming his feelings for Marina Crane. Their friendship came first. But surely, it could not be love, because she's his best friend.
Moving on to Season 3: Colin returns once more, everything has changed. His relationship to Pen is severely severed and he can't figure out why. His emotional stability is completely off balance, so he searches for companionship ins strangers and wonders why he never feels complete. Then, Pen focuses on other men, and he completely spirals. He's her friend, so he should help her. He still does not understand why he's so focused on her, so ... yearning. So, when he kisses her, it finally hits him. Because this is the intimate closeness he's had with women, the same kind of intimacy that left him lonely and confused. But with her, it's different. For once, he doesn't think, because he found his way home. It's earth shattering, but it had always been there.
Colin Bridgerton is just oblivious as hell.

I believe Colin always had a crush on Penelope. Maybe deep down he just didn't feel that he was good enough for her. Also he is so clueless that he genuinely though Pen only sees him as a friend . So unconsciously, Colin friendzoned himself until S3 when they had their 1st kiss. It was at that moment that his feeling resurfaced and he realized he's in love with her.
