This Jesuit priest explains why the church should accept and welcome the LGBTQ+ community

In US news and current events today, this LGBTQ Pride Month 2020, we celebrate 2020 Pride Month by honoring the trailblazers who fought for LGBTQ+ rights and LGBT rights all around the world. We take some LGBTQ rights for granted here in America, even though we still have much progress to make. The Catholic Church has not been the friendliest place to LGBTQ+ people, and religion in general has long been at odds with the LGBTQ community. However, that can change. This Jesuit Priest has been advocating for LGBTQ+ acceptance within Catholicism for some time, because religion should be no place for intolerance and hate. The Catholic Church is an ancient institution that is very slow to change, but with advocates like James Martin on the side of justice, the reform Catholicism movement may create a better church that is accepting of all.

When I was growing up in the Catholic Church, it was priests like this that kept me from falling into a pit of despair and killing myself. I remember the first time I was accepted by a faith leader for who I was.. I cried because I’ve never felt that type of unconditional love before. That love reminded me of what I used to imagine Jesus’ love was supposed to feel like every night that I prayed to him.

That is true Christianity. Never did I question myself until people started to tell me that Jesus and God somehow hated me. These compassionate gestures of love and acceptance—no matter how simple—means so much more to these young, struggling souls than anyone else outside of the community will ever realize.

I really felt when he said that we should stand up for people because that’s what Jesus did and we shouldn’t be afraid to be judged because even Jesus went through these things !!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

What about when He said "sin no more?"

If they believe homosexuality is a sin as the scriptures tell us and want to repent, then they should be welcomed. But if they think being homosexual is ok like the dude during St.Pauls time who thought sleeping with his brothers wife was ok, they should be excommunicated like St.Paul excommunicate the dude.

I was raised in the Catholic religion, but I welcome my arms to those who are LGBTQ+. I have many friends in the community who have been nothing but kind and they are among the friendliest people I have ever met. God taught us to love one another, and it's one of the things he taught that I standby wholeheartedly.

If only we were accepted... so many more people wouldn’t have to suffer about coming out

EXACTLY. From when I was a kid the main message was Jesus loves everyone and so should you. That’s why I don’t understand how Christians love God but hate minorities. 🙄
The God I know loves me no matter what my sexuality is 🤷🏾‍♀️

God is love and holy. Those who are followers of Jesus Christ should display and Love everyone from the LBGTQ community. God is holy and he cannot support anything or any lifestyle that goes against his nature. Remember God’s nature is holiness and righteousness.

Was raised Catholic and no longer practice "God/Jesus" faith because of this stance. I am spiritual but not in terms the doctrine set out by organized religions. I believe in the universe, and all LGBTQ+ are welcome in my stars.

Nah bruh Jesus was not a panderer. Jesus accepted those that repented their sins and changed. Homosexuality is a sin.

Welcome the person, not the sin. Teach them, and help them, but don't fuel the sin.
