wouldnt it make more sense for the circle to signal that the search WASNT interrupted, that way if they have to flee or die while searching theres no circle and you can tell something happened

You missed one of the cooler parts. When you're about to go in you just spray on one line, and put in your time and ID. That way if someone comes up and the other half of the X isn't there, they know you're still inside and potentially in trouble.

Actually that spot on the right is for notes: that should include hazards, but can also include things like where has been searched or where bodies are located if civilian volunteers conducted the search.

I went to New Orleans after Katrina for clean up, when I learned what the X's were and noticed several houses that had corpses in them it was pretty haunting.

I have some training in this, when entering a room you just put one slash, then complete the X once it’s done to signal that the room is cleared. So if you see just a line that means the searching party is still inside

I’ve studied for these kinda things, the X thing is for logging the house- survivors hazards and those things- if it is a slash instead of an X the team is still inside the house.

In a post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, you can still find the Xs everywhere, even on inhabited homes. It's a reminder of the devastation brought on by the catastrophic failure of the federal levees.

We used that X code during JTF Katrina. I was there for about 3 months. Originally we were there to do search and rescue in St. Bernard's Parish because our vehicles and helicopters were the only way to get into the area (AAVP7A1), plus with the added lunatics shooting at random people like those entering and exiting hospitals. With the combined threat of gunfire and unreachable area by conventional means, they normally wouldn't deploy active-duty Marines domestically, so the orders must have came from up high. By the time we performed operations, there wasn't anyone in need of rescue. Just count the dead and tag the house.
