Never use twist on style wire connections for automotive wiring. These are not meant to be use in cars and they can vibrate loose, exposing wires, which can cause a fire.

My preferred method for automotive wiring is to use self solder seal heat shrink wire connection that is air tight, water proof, won't vibrate loose, and you can visibly "see the connection" which can is a plus if you're hunting down any electrical issues. This method is much simpler than trying to use a soldering iron in a tight spot under the dashboard while you're upside down with your feet poking through the sunroof.

Although those things are great they only make a good connection whenever you get the solder to melt so just hold the heat gun on there for a bit longer

Notice the soldered hasn't melt yet? Keep adding heat until it does then its good

I prefer crimp conections, the failure rate on a properly done crimp is far less than a very low temp soldier like these quick solder connections. Solder over time also tends to degrade especially with vibration

These are fine if you use a heat gun, but a torch will cook the plastic before the solder melts. I finish mine with electric tape to make sure the wires never poke through the plastic once it is heated.

you can use a lighter to ensure the metal in the middle melts thus making an even stronger connection

Watch Big Clive's video on these. Some don't melt until the temp is way too high, but his video shows you what it should look like.

Plus the wire nuts takes up way more space, of which behind a dash lets be honest us usually very minimal

Yes, my lord he knows he didn’t melt the solder all the way thru yet, for video and editing purposes for the video I’m sure he did this

Your solder joint didn’t melt properly 😂

It has been shown to me I was wrong, in some cases, multi strand wire can be attached to single strand so this comment is updated and corrected.

First, don't use the self soldering heat shrink. The heat shrink gets too hot before the solder melts and can leave exposed wires in a metal compartment. Second, wire nuts are a life saver if you driver a beater. I was a residential electrician when I was 2 hours away and had a battery terminal get knicked by the fan and break in the middle. What was the only thing in my vehicle at the time? A bucket of wire nuts!

You're really supposed to heat it up until the solder melts. It won't do a bit of good if it's still in ring form.

I didn't see the solder melt. So 5his connection is only as tight as the twist. Then held in place by the heat shrink. In this video the wire nut was a better solution.

Nope. Wire nuts work great for automotive. They work great, are clean and reliable.

And yet he does not have the solder melted so if he pulls hard enough it'll come right apart because of the fact that all that's holding is the shrink tubing

Cheap head units i will use removable connectors thank you, what happens when it breaks 😂

These are more expensive and require heat. Why not use the crimp butt connectors like everyone else?

Never should you use those type of twist connectors. Period. End of sentence.
