I am a Christian and I can't drink because I'm an alcoholic. And I've always said if you can drink responsibly go for it it's nothing wrong with it unless of course you're like me then it's a major league issue.

Jesus turned the water into wine, not grape juice.

As a Christian who drinks (though not excessively) I just wanted to say thank you for this video. We need to honor each other's convictions, instead of trying to twist The Bible to claim that convictions are absolutes and what is not a sin is a sin or vice versa. In general, we need to let the text of The Bible speak for itself, instead of making it say what we think it should. This applies to a ton of things, not just the conversation around alcohol.

I drank alcohol after accepting Christ for a few months, but then I realized that I was still drinking in excess and I couldn’t have alcohol without having too much or desiring more, so I personally just abstain from it all together. I quit one day and haven’t had a drop since.
But that’s because I know I can’t have alcohol without having too much. But I think if you can handle having a beer or a glass of wine, that should be okay. Just as long as it doesn’t become an idol

Not to mention, why warn against drinking non-alcoholic wine to excess?

I myself abstain from alcohol, because i know both my family's history with it, and my predisposition to excess, but i don't tell people "stay away from alcohol", rather "do your best to not abuse it" because its obvious the bible warns against drunkenness' and excess, not drinking alcohol. In the end its each individuals choice what to abstain from, as long as its not something obviously destructive and sinful.

This video covers pretty much what I have been sharing with people throughout the years. "Alcohol disturbs your relationship with God, then it's wrong. But if it doesn't disturb it, then there's nothing wrong with it."
Thanks for this clip.

Chesterton said it best: “We should thank God for beer and Burgundy by not drinking too much of them.”

I'll drink to that 🍺

I just drank a bottle of beer before watching this 😂
And I don't drink much. I haven't been drunk nor lost my self-control on alcohol my whole life and that's thanks to God.

I was drinking heavily for a couple of years, then came to faith in Christ and reduced my drinking to once a week and in 2015 God freed me from drinking completely and i feel great, no need to touch that stuff at all and feel completely fine about it, is great, i wish everybody the same.

Even as someone who hates alcoholic beverages, the use of literally reading into metaphor is ridiculous

The problem with speaking common sense like this is they then accuse you of being a drunkard, because only a drunk would disagree with them. It’s very unchristian behavior.

The only Christians I’ve ever heard of who think drinking alcohol is a literal sin are some variations of the fundamentalist Baptist movement. Literally everyone else in Christendom I’ve ever heard of allows alcohol, both now and historically. Where did this ridiculous notion even start?

I don't like alcohol, I don't think people should drink alcohol because it's way too easily abused but I understand why the Bible says drinking alcohol is ok(mostly because alcohol is a fact of life and can be consumed responsibly) and I don't judge or hate on people who drink alcohol. But I wish it wasn't a thing tbh

The Catholic Church's position (which is also shared by the other major Christian groups) is the one that makes the most sense: drinking alcohol is not a sin, but drunkenness is. As stated in the _Catechism of the Catholic Church:_

*CCC 2290*

The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others' safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

A historical fact that they often leave out is that this wine likely wasn't anywhere near the strength of the wine we have today, which often has added sugars and yeast for a higher alcohol content. They could have drank quite a bit at Cana and still not have become drunk.

This is not an issue for Catholics. There are monastery's where one of the main activities for the monks outside prayer is to make wine or beer. There is even a 2016 book, "Pint's with Aquinas, " that imagines the author sitting down over a pint to discuss various doctrines with the 'Angelic Doctor'.

This idea that Christians cannot drink is mostly just a dry and often hypocritical moralism. Now, in some cases, such as the case of people who had trouble with excess drinking, than giving up drink altogether may be necessary for their spiritual development. But it is certainly not necessary for all Christians.

In C.S. Lewis's works teetotalism is often associated with the 'bad guys' if my memory serves...right?

Even church leadership is allowed to drink. 1 Timothy 3:8 says that they shouldn’t be allowed to drink “much wine” which clearly allows for some wine.

I actually do not consume alcohol, but this is my preference and I wholly agree with your clarification of it not being a sin as long as it is done within limits (I.e. not to excess).
