Phone addiction is a huge problem for many. This is fascinating about the dopamine factor. Why isn't this talked about more?

This is so true. When you build an relationship based on using the phone, do you know what happened to you in real life? You lose your pleasure without notice it.And your start going down little by little in the real life.

Indeed, I personally made commitment to myself in selecting task; remove all distraction to feel that super natural high. Multitasking is a fallacy😊

I've never considered the dopamine association with phone use until now so . . . good point you make.

Jaron Lanier has talked about the negatives of carrying a phone around everywhere and his points are exceptionally valid. Do a YT search for Jaron Lanier.

Personally, I've hated them from the beginning. I've had a Tracfone since the late 90's. Same number, three phones over time. I use it when going out of town or when involved in some local project that requires prompt communications but otherwise it stays turned off. The primary thing I've hated about them is anybody who has the number of your mobile phone can interrupt anything you are doing, at any time. Even if one is just thinking about something, having a phone go off will interrupt and more likely put an end to whatever one was engaged in prior to the phone ringing/beeping/whatever it's set to do. I can't stand being victimized in this way although most people obviously don't seem to mind. I don't understand why not. I also don't understand how anyone can get a dopamine rush from a damn phone going off. Clearly I'm not within what has become normal . . . but nothing new there.

Also, I enjoy writing and reading and trying to use a phone for these pleasures is a huge step down from a laptop.

Mobile phones have their uses and in some cases quite important ones, but my landline is phone enough for me - except for the two things I mention above. My dislike . . . actual hatred I guess it is . . . for what has become "phone culture" and the devices that enable it puts me way outside the norm but I'm used to being way outside the norm. One example (of many) of why I despise them is the example of a woman in an SUV about a year ago texting on her phone while going 75 or more on the freeway. Traffic ahead of her had stopped, as it often does on freeways in larger cities and she plowed straight into the rear of a semi truck killing not only herself but her three kids in the car with her. If it had been me in a car that she ran into instead of the semi I, or you, would have been dead too. Texting or phone use while driving is supposed to be against the law, but seems like nobody pays attention to this. I think the cops have just given up trying to enforce this law. I've read phone use is involved in a huge number of traffic accidents. There's just so many negatives associated with the phone culture I could list at least twenty without even having to think about it. Experiencing a dopamine increase through use of a phone is incomprehensible to me.

I noticed this yesterday morning. I have some reading I have to do for uni and usually I'd switch the laptop on first thing after I had my morning coffee. But yesterday morning, I left it off. And read. I was so focused on the reading. My phone's wi-fi was switched off so it could charge properly. I read uninterrupted. And now I know what to do when I have to complete anything. Switch off.

Well damn. I've been working out 5 to 6 days per week for years and years, and over the last 3 weeks, I've experienced a complete cratering of my motivation. I was really hoping this video might shed some light, but I never use my phone while working out, and I don't use any stimulants except a cup or tea or two. Back to the drawing board... Maybe I can break through it soon.

Wait wait wait. Is he implying I shouldn’t eat a donut while watching porn during my game’s load screen?

Andrew Huberman has some really fascinating stuff and this is one of them. He's not just regurgitating the same stuff and puts it all together in a whole different way. He knows his stuff.
I know some about dopamine since I have both RLS and bipolar disorder (1). I take pramipexole (Mirapex) for my RLS. It's a dopamine agonist so it increases dopamine's availability (non-scientific wording) but has side effects I have to watch out for - impulsivity being the big one. For years I took pramipexole and bupropion (Wellbutrin) and it lead to some bad times and bad behaviors. It wasn't until I stopped the bupropion that I really felt closer to normal and my mood stabilizer could really work. BTW, if you're already on a dopamine agonist and a doctor gives you an anti-psychotic medication, be careful. Many anti-psychotics are dopamine ANTAGONISTS which is the opposite and can wreak havoc on your system. Please discuss carefully with your provider.
Interestingly, I watched another Huberman vid this morning about working out in the morning before you eat then not eating until around 2 p.m. to burn the most fat quicker. Inspiring for me in that because of the pramipexole, I have a night eating problem that I need to end if I want to lose more weight and keep it off. Fortunately, I take CLA now which really great for the snacking urges so combined with my new knowledge from the other vid, I am more motivated than ever to not eat late at night or during the night.

Is this why since I quit smoking weed I don’t enjoy anything as much ?

So basically just don’t bring your phone to the gym or anytime you gotta focus on something?

So, it's not so much additional stimuli, such as music, but access to the addiction of the cell phone?

I am listening to this at work while playing a video game and taking a phone call. Sorry not sorry.
