the famous author of such bestsellers as Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, writer Joan Rowling once said in an interview the wonderful words: only our choices reveal who we really are, much more than our abilities. And she certainly knows that. After all, before she became a famous and mega-rich writer, she was at the very bottom. Today I'm going to tell you a story that went so viral a few years ago that it went around the world in a matter of days and won the hearts of millions of people. It's probably the best example of how two perfectly equal people making different choices in their lives determine their path in life. But first things first.

I like the way she said “the only thing sad is how old we’ve gotten.” In that moment, despite their VERY different positions in life she still regarded the two of them as equals. That’s the type of person you need as a judge!

no amount of punishment could change that man, but kindness and humility did.

This is the story of my son. Very smart, very popular, went down the wrong road, ended up in prison for the same reasons. Broke my heart in a million pieces. But, like Arthur, my son turned his life around, and now he has a wonderful family and is successful in his chosen career. Nice job, Arthur! My heart's with your mom.

She awoke in Arthur memories of who he really was deep inside the young man before, and without the addictions that was still in there. He needed that gentle loving reminder. Not people lecturing, insulting or degrading him. Great job Arthur, great job Judge

The way she reminded him about his past and went down to meet him after his release just showcases how good a lady she is! Massive Respect to her 🙏

She saw him as a person and she crossed his path when it was needed. Such a great story.

She deserves to be a judge...she simply could have ignored him cuz he became a criminal...but she didn't cuz she remembered the best of him. What a great soul she is....and that guy also...he did turn his life...and it's really hard to do that.

I know this man worked hard to get back on his feet. Lest not forget the company that didn't hold his past against him. Gave him a chance. Even when part of his issues were drug abuse, yet he got a career in the same area that was a crutch to his life. Amazing. More employers need to give folks a chance.

I am so happy she didn’t give him a pass. She gave him the stern love he desperately needs. This story is soooo inspiring.

The power of caring. She could have hidden that she knew him and just moved on to the next case, but she took the time to reach out and show concern and that helped to change a man's life. Beautiful.

I'm so proud of this woman, (Judge) just few words from her, changed her old school friend life entirely. She is an angel.

This gentleman hit rock bottom yet crawled his way back up in to the light. I have the highest respect for the way he turned his life around.
Who would have thought that all it took was some encouragement from a kind old friend.
This is such an incredible story. Much love to both of them.
Sorry my English is bad.

Wonderful story, it wasn't just that he felt ashamed, it was that she spoke so glowingly of the person who used to be. I think that probably woke him up a little and made him realize I can still be a successful person, his former classmate that said she looked up to him as a student is now a judge...he believed in himself again.

The fact that she let it be known that she had remembered him from school and how she looked at him with admiration when they were growing up was the straw that broke the camel's back in his whole demeanor. It can only take someone that was there with him, that genuinely cared for him, to make him wake up to question his reality and the path he took, up to that point in life, and realize that he needs to change for the better

Respect to the judge who guided a middle school friendship into something so overwhelming and fruitful.

He became a manager at a pharmaceutical company? As a former addict? That is mighty impressive. The amount of trust he earned with that company is overwhelming. He really did just do a 180 turn from being an addicted thief to a normal life.

I completely understand the shame Arthur felt. Standing there, remembering all his dreams of what his life would be when he grew up. To be in front of someone who knew him back when he had that spark of joy, when life was full of hope. She reminded him that he can still be that. She reminded him that he is a good person and he isn’t his circumstances. You can still change your life around, even up until your dying day there is hope. Thank you Arthur and Judge Mindy

Can we just reflect on how this man was in his 30's and started from scratch, had a record, overcame and addiction, and STILL managed to turn his entire life around within 5 years and have his own house, a respectable and well paying pharmaceutical management job, and traveling. Alot of ppl in their 30's still struggle to reach that. Goes to show it's all in your power what you do in your life, your life is in your control. No excuses.
