My transmission was rebuilt at 23, 000 miles. It's now over 125, 000 miles and still going strong.

Never rebuild your transmission unless it's broken.

I rebuilt my transmission from my 98 chevy c1500 from youtube videos. It cost me just about $400 in total. That's been several years ago and it's still kicking like new

When I first started rebuilding automatic transmissions I didn't know what I was doing. After I popped open my first bell housing with a sliding hammer everything looked confusing and I didn't know where to put the clutch plates or anything but after 10 years of doing it things have become second nature. I wouldn't recommend anyone do it unless they have a lot of experience or have a very mechanically inclined mind because the ingenuity ( or enginuity for fun) behind an automatic transmission is genius.

Rebuilt my GM 4L60E transmission by myself at home. Followed a guide on YT.

Three years later it's still going strong.

Hey Scotty, I'm a pretty good backyard mechanic but never wanted to, or was afraid to, touch a transmission...until the pump of my 4l60E transmission exploded of my 2004 Trailblazer. Found some vids on YT for step by step teardown and rebuild and 24, 000 miles later, still running great. For me the hardest part was getting the tranny out and back in. The teardown and rebuild was way easier than I thought.

Sorry Scotty- I've been a professional transmission rebuilder for 5 decades, and I can't tell you how many "remanufactured" transmission I've had to actually fix. The remanufacturing companies use the cheapest parts and labor. Even the "factory remans"- the jobs are sublet out to the lowest bidder. I'll put one of my unit against ANY reman facility. Your just plain wrong about this one.

But what if my transmission was rebuilt by a literal clown?

Scotty, your intention is good as always; however, I can only partially agree with you on this. A Tahoe uses a GM 4L60/4L65E transmission, and it is one of the easiest transmissions to rebuild; and if it's done "properly", it can last a very long time. The reason why one would fail, is because somebody was grossly incompetent or they've been cutting corners. What the consumer truly needs to understand, is that although a factory reman is a good option, it's still not a completely proven one... In my transmission rebuilding experience, I've even come across "factory remanufactured" units that failed prematurely. Yes, they were under warranty, but somebody still has to be paid to remove it and reinstall a replacement; which of course the factory didn't cover, and was a burden passed on to the consumer. I always made people aware of that, whenever they brought up the subject of a factory reman. In your book, I might have been considered an outlier, because I always took pride in banging those units out, even exceeding factory standards with a "Beast" sunshell for the higher HP applications, (without one single comeback). My point... As with all trades, it's all about the reputation that precedes WHO you take it to.

Installing additional transmission cooler can make your transmission last alot alot longer.

You bring me down Scotty Kilmer as I started my rebuild career in 1983, and I've known many excellent transmission rebuilders in my 39 years of exposure .

The factory doesn’t upgrade anything on the transmission. Shops do but your opinion is your opinion I guess

I often recommend a low-mileage original, identical replacement, used unit. I've swapped many, not one has failed. In ALL instances, OEM filters and fluids were used.

I have a 1999 Chevy Tahoe with 115, 000 miles and it has had the transmission rebuilt. I guess the mechanic must have rebuilt it really well as that was 5-7 years ago and we haven't had problems. It has always ran like a true great Chevy with no problems! And in great condition! Will never get rid of it.

My 03 1500 rams transmission failed at 71, 000 miles two months before the 7 year drivetrain warranty. It came with a 7 year 70, 000 mile warranty 😡. I paid close to $4, 000 at the dealership for a remanufactured transmission along with new universal joints and differential service. My truck now has 215, 000 miles on it and it still runs like a top. Recently I replaced inner and outer tie rod ends, complete lower arms, upper ball joints, coil springs, all four shocks, rotors, pads, end links, and sway bar bushings. This took two weekends totaling about 24 hours because I’m a not a professional mechanic. It gave me a great sense of accomplishment and yes it was quite stressful. My truck feels like new driving down the road again. Thank you for talking me out of buying a new truck. I’ve heard you multiple times saying to stay away from dodge trucks. I’ve never hade a check engine light or a failure other than the transmission ten years ago. I drive it hard every day. But I do keep up to date with the maintenance. Have I been lucky or have I been able to get away with out all the suspense repairs had I bought a tundra ? Thank you again sir 👍🏾
