I want to show you How to PUSH BABY OUT without purple pushing. This is what your Pelvic Floor has to say about "Purple Pushing" in birth (aka "closed-glottis" where you hold your breath, bear down and turn your face purple as you are trying to push baby out).

"Please don't!"

Breathe (aka open glottis pushing where you exhale as you push), it's so much kinder on your pelvic floor, potentially reducing your risk of tears or even pelvic organ prolapse.

It may take slightly longer get your baby out with open glottis pushing, but your pelvic floor will thank you.

There's recent studies in the Journal of Midwifery that conclude the effectiveness of the type of directed pushing does not appear to differ between the open and closed glottis groups.

Thus women should be able to CHOOSE the type of directed pushing they prefer to use during birth. Professionals must therefore be trained in both types so that they can adequately support women as they give birth.

So it's your choice girl. Don't hold your breath, even if your doctor or midwife tells you to. Talk with them prior about this and know your options.

They did this study on women who had an epidural because directed pushing (telling mom when to push) is more common with epidural births.

I would say the second one seems more effective in pushing the baby out

Everyone kept telling me to hold my breath, and I couldn't figure out how to do that.

This is helpful! But I can’t help cringing as I was advised during birth to do your first demonstration and as a result had a fourth-° tear! At the end I’m happy to have a healthy baby, but I can’t help wonder if I had been coached to do the second option? It’s hard when you’re in the moment just trying to get a baby out though to work against what their coach! 😢

But how realistic is this when the pain has taken over and you just want to go wild? Not a first time mummy here!😊
