ADULT and TEEN STUTTERING: Quick Fixes Speedy Speech Therapy for Stutters and Stammers

Based on request - here's a video aimed to help teens and adults reduce disfluencies/stuttering/stammering in daily speech!

Remember though: mild disfluencies are a normal part of speech! Also, UNUSUAL circumstances can creat anxiety, which is often a trigger for increased stuttering (not a cause) so consider a possible 2-3 month phrase if you begin to stutter when things are out of the ordinary (aka pandemic)! Give it time to let things normalize and if stuttering still persists, try these strategies and techniques to help!

Stuttering STRATEGIES for ADULTS/TEENS:
-Have time to PLAN what you will say
-Take the focus OFF of you when introducing yourself and put it on remembering THEIR name instead!
- Practice your name / key phrases in the mirror while using eye contact!
- Use a melodic intonation approach when needed (sing-songy rhythm)
- Practice EASY Onsets (easing into a sentence instead of beginning with a hard/loud start)
-If you find yourself stuttering A LOT in one sentence - STOP the sentence, re-group and try again!
-RELAX! ALL typical/normal speech has mild-moderate disfluencies! The less you worry, the better it is! You can do it!

Omg thanks for making this video! I have such a difficult time saying my name so I’m definitely going to try this. I’m 31 years old with a mild stutter that becomes severe with my anxiety increases. I just got hired for a position at a hospital which requires a lot of talking so I’m looking for ways to help me cope.

Many adults and therapists mean well when they offer advice to hide stuttering. It's important to know that it's OK to stutter. I have worked with and listened to many teens and adults who stutter and they often talk about practicing speech alone in a mirror or reading aloud. If you think about it, what makes talking alone or to a pet so different from speaking to another person? It's the identity of being a person who stutters, of the stigma attached to the act of stuttering and the real or perceived consequences that might follow. It's difficult to build confidence when you are trying to hide part of who you really are-a person who stutters (sometimes). There are confident stutterers out there who are excellent communicators. You don't have to choose between fluency and communicating well. Open Stutter is a YouTube page with videos of stutterers just like this-it's not my page, but I share if pretty often with clients and families. If you stutter, know that you aren't broken and you don't need to be fixed. Just want you to know you have more than one choice.

I used to be able to speak really good but now That I’m in my teenage years, my speech is horrible. I be forgetting how to put sentences together. Or my words will get mixed up, sometimes I’ll stop out of nowhere. It’s really frustrating any tips ?

I stuttered as a child and into adult hood, it was worse in my teens than got a little better as an adult but to this day I still stutter a bit. I made some observations, when I talk to new people I'm going to date I by habit lower my voice and talk smooth and rarely stutter, then when I talk to my friends or family, or at work, or when I particularly recall and retell a story it's when I stutter the worse. In HS in certain classes I stayed quite most of the time out of fear I would stutter, then In some other classes I was more comfortable with talking and didn't stutter as much. I have been very deeply ashamed of this and couldn't even admit that I stuttered to my self

“How to Stop Stuttering & Love Speaking” by Lee G. Lovett will greatly help. His books and online program are AMAZING!

I used to love presentations and would always go first. Now I’m the last. When the teacher calls me first I always feel like I would actually rather die.

I always had a mild to moderate stutter that comes and goes, it started as a kid and went into adulthood, I was always severely embarrassed by the fact and couldn't even admit it to myself because I was ashamed and thought that even looking up or seeking therapy was shameful and couldn't come to do it, but now I've been more open to it

THANK YOU very much for your videos! The eye contact part is difficult when you're autistic but the other parts of the exercises I think will help. Anxiety is the WORST, and people watching you try to breathe while trying to talk to them without stuttering a lot... oh man it's rough!

I raise awareness on genocide in Australia, and its extremely frustrating when I am trying to explain serious topics when stammering. When I sing, I never stammer.

Idk what happened but some time in the last 2 years I've started struggling with speech or noise. I've always had some form of social anxiety so I thought the issues I had when younger were because of that. But now this effects me less but pronunciation has become worse. It's like I chew the words on the way out, like my tongue and teeth are getting in the way. Or sometimes my tone is way off. Anyone have any experience with this?

I'm an adult who developed a stutter at 26. I have no issue with public speaking but really struggle when replying to a singular person. Usually the whole response is tough but especially the first word. Any advice would be so helpful :)

Hey! Any tips on speaking on the phone. My stuttering happens very frequently on the phone. That’s usually where my anxiety is. I also tend to hold my breath and the words don’t come out.
