In England (where I live) in the 1800s it was illegal to hang a child under 6 years old, but there was no such thing as a birth certificate, so even 13 years olds could get away with the claim if they were abnormally short.

I live in the south eastern part of Pennsylvania. So I definitely remember hearing about Billy's execution back in 1996. I was 16 at the time. But it was one of the big news stories in my local news back then. I live just 1 hour and 35 minutes away from where he was executed.

Across the road from my house is a stone tablet that marks the location where a group of smugglers called the Hawkhurst gang were publicly hanged, their bodies were then placed on gallows all over town as a warning. The tablet is extremely worn and quit hard to read but here's an excerpt:

"As a memorial to posterity and a warning to this and succeeding generations this stone is erected AD1749.”
Kind of creepy, but very fascinating.
