Importing SRT Files and Formatting the Subtitles in Premiere Pro 2020 & 2021

In this tutorial we go over importing an SRT file into Premiere Pro correctly and then formatting the subtitles/captions. I do this is both Premiere Pro 2020 and Premiere 2021 (which is currently in beta).

For this tutorial, we use SRT files created by Transcriptive, but it applies to any SRT file regardless of where it was created.

If you're only interested in Premiere 2021, jump to the 2:50 mark of the tutorial. This uses the 2021 beta (i.e. 14.9 beta), but at this point it seems unlikely to change. So this should be accurate for the release as well. To get the beta, just go to the Beta section in Creative Cloud.

For 2020, the Import Settings in the lower left corner of the Caption panel is really important for getting SRT files to come in correctly. You can also fix individual files by right clicking on them and going to Modify:Interpret Footage.

This is brought to you by Digital Anarchy's Transcriptive. The best way to get A.I. transcripts into Premiere. They're incredibly accurate and you can edit them right within Premiere. This means you can search every transcript in your project, use the text to actually edit your video, create captions and even send the transcript to a client using a web browser for review and editing. It's a very powerful, well rounded solution for Premiere Pro.

hi, everything went great until I tried to change the font size, color or anything. It gets changed in the caption window and small preview in the caption window, but it doesn't change on the final video preview screen. I have even tried exporting one to check but no luck.. I don't understand why. And no one seems to be having the same issue. You are the only one who mentioned this. Could you tell me how to fix this, please?

Thumbs up 👍🏻 for just the “select all” option alone! Just been resizing each one sentence by sentence on a project today! 😕

What if the srt. is not the same framerate as my video/timeline - how can I change the srt framerate prior to dragging it onto my timeline ?

I select all captions by pressing Shift + End on the first one. Never knew about the right click.

I've formatted my Subtitle caption to have a solid black background, however when I export as an SRT for closed captions there is no solid background, it's just white text with a black drop shadow. Any ideas why?

Anyone have any clue why my .srt sometimes creates really long captions. Unfortunately this is really slowing my process down because the split caption button in premiere literally only duplicates the same really long caption. So you can cut it to the proper timings on your timeline but still have the whole long caption showing there. Hope they fix the button in the future so it actually cuts where your cursor is on the text panel.

Hey man, nice vid.

Do you know if Premiere pro 2020 can read the symbols within the SRT file? Such as <i/> and stuff like that to make the text cursive or black.

Hi! Can you export the SRT file separately after you make style changes to it? (Using the Early Access" Premiere CC method.

Did Premiere get rid of the ability to adjust all SRT files at once? Working with Premiere Pro 2021 and if I want to adjust the font on my SRT file, I have to adjust every clip individually?

Very nice, thank you for posting it! But... Premiere Pro 2021 isn't yet available on CC?

Thanks for the explanation. I'm having problems with the size of my captions. There isn't a resolution for the .srt and anytime I try to increase the font size past a certain point it makes a new line. I just want to scale up my captions. I don't believe there are import setting anymore either. Working with Premiere 2021. Thanks.
