When I was on a high carb diet (the one he recommends), I developed osteopenia (one level before osteoporosis). A change to a higher protein diet saw that issue disappear.

Protein poisoning (also referred to as rabbit starvation, or fat starvation) is a rare form of acute malnutrition caused by a complete ABSENCE of fat in the diet.

According to Stefánsson, rabbit starvation doesn’t happen if you eat a balanced diet, so you must eat enough fat … you must eat the fat with the lean. And they did not ‘barely survive’, in fact Stefánson said while he lived on the carnivore diet, he was feling the best he ever had…

The man who first discovered the benefits of the eskimo diet, Vjilhalmur Stefansson proved it was not harmful almost 90 years ago. He lived on a meat only diet for 6 years, and a mostly meat diet for the rest of his life and lived to 83 in good health, as well as being a participant with another man to produce two studies on the health effects of a meat only diet. No scurvy, no rabbit starvation, no health issues whatsoever and said he felt full of energy every day

7:50 and ancient Egyptians ate a high starch grain based diet with far less fat and meat and still suffered from metabolic diseases like cancer and diabetes and atherosclerotic CVD, what’s your point McDougall?

This is very biased and deliberately misinformed. Read the books of Vilhjalmur Stefansson who lived with the Inuit in the early 1900s before Western processed foods were introduced to them. When they were still eating their traditional diet in isolation from the developed world, they were incredibly healthy, consuming around 5% of their diet from carbs.

When the grains, veg oils and sugars went up, the problems started occurring.

It's called the "Randle Cycle". The combination of fats and carbs together is what causes inflammation and all it's associated diseases. Fat and sugar compete for metabolic pathways. You have to choose one or the other. Your body can't use both fuels at the same time. It'll always prioritise burning and storing the sugars first, then fat second.

Come on dude, this is nutrition basics 101. Old man be loosing his mind.

So the French and Norwegian are unhealthy also? Way to much personal and scientific evidence say this is wrong. Did high carb, whole grain foods and fruits and have been fighting type 2 diabetes for 7 years at 58 lifelong athlete. 3 months on Ketogenic and everything drastically changed with a 18 pound weight loss with out trying. Ate very well during all this also. Ketosis is not keto-acidosis.

I LIVE IN ALASKA.
They found a couple of Eskimo women frozen in some ice. They had died a long time ago. The women were about 40 years old. These women, who would have eaten the diet he is describing had ADVANCED OSTEOPOROSIS. That's because too much protein leaches calcium from your bones.

Think about this. If ate no protein diet you would die. If you ate a no fat diet you would die. However if ate a no carb diet you would still live. Your body doesn't require carbohydrates, the very little you do, your liver has the ability to make it.

15 percent carbs? Somehow i seriously doubt that. Also the inuit didnt eat mostly muscle meat like we do they ate the fat and organ meat. There is no way thr ate enough fresh muscle meat to keep them oit of ketosis. Mcdougall clearly doesnt understand the inuit diet.

So because the eskimo eats his meat raw he doesn't go into ketosis. Therefore if I want to go into ketosis I have to cook my meat? The good doctor does not make sense.

Steve jobs was a long time vegan but died of cancer.

Mr. McDougall, the brain does not "only run on In the absence of carbs, the brain easily adapts to using ketone bodies as fuel and seems to run better and create less "pollution" (ROS) while increasing IDE (insulin degrading enzyme) which is only present in the absence of insulin which is only possible when carb intake is minimized (say less than 20 grams of carbs per You should know this....

The problem is the type of meat: Eskimo;s ate food from the wild. And he is wrong; Eskimo's ate healthy and knew how to store vegetables and how to ferment them.
