The Master of Wine is considered to be one of the most difficult qualifications if not the most difficult qualification in the wine world.

Even though the qualification exists since 1953 and there are several really famous Famous Masters of Wine living and working all around the world there are currently only 417 Masters of Wine, living in 31 different countries and just 493 people have passed the MW exam since 1953.

So you may be wondering just like I do … How the hell did Konstantin do it?! Here is the story.

When I finished school I did not know what to do. Wine was certainly not an option as I grew up in an area of Germany where there is no wine production at all and few people drink wine. After a lot of back and forth, I decided to something that most of my friends could not understand. I did not go to university but instead did an apprenticeship at one of the best hotels in Germany. I wanted to become the Manager of a great hotel and this was how were supposed to start your career. A German apprenticeship follows a real program and I spent three years at the hotel, worked in different departments, and learned more about cooking, service, and wine at school.

Wine was a topic that I felt drawn to pretty quickly. I liked the fact that wine combines so many things, there is the sensory side to it which is very subjective but that there is also a lot of culture, history, and science that I could discover. I started to buy books and went to more and more tastings.

I was pleased to hear you talk about Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud in Dublin. My wife and I will be traveling in Ireland next month and we got reservations for dinner there. Their wine list isn't public as far as I can tell, so I'm really looking forward to diving into their wine book at the table.

I am always really impressed that you passed this test because you have to spend such an amount of money for it and lots of people never pass the exam. I have always pretty good in learning new things from books but I never had to go working during my own studies and also I have tried many wines and spirits during the last 15 years I am still far from being good at describing them or finding out what it is in a blind tasting so its really great what you did and I am really thankful that you share your knowledge with us!

Cool - I also get attracted to wine by a burgundy, namely a Charmes Chambertin which was lacking the etiquette so I don‘t remember the producer. My father got it from there and returned about 50 bottles to Zurich in his american car, about 50 years ago when I still was a teenager. I will never forget that wine. Thanks for sharing your story.

I loved learning more about the program, and your journey. Nelson is a great little town. I regret not visiting your alma mater when I was there.

Really impressed, Konstantin, and happy for you! One feels your joy of sharing your knowledge and that shines through all of your videos. Thanks so much for telling us your story. It is so much fun learning more about wines from a 'Master', who also happened to be someone you can trust. I definitetly will taste a few more of Konstantin's favorite wines and have fun doing it. Danke! Well deserved!

Great story and great result for all your efforts. Nelson is a beautiful little city with a delightful micro-climate. If only it wasn't situated on an earthquake fault line.

That was really interesting. I hope you will do a video about how to taste and describe a quality wine to differentiate a cheap wine, a moderate wine, and a really nice wine. I have found some inexpensive wines that I enjoy, and I'd like to be able to describe why a $30 wine is so much more enjoyable for me than a $125 wine. I suspect there are several measures of quality, as well as subjective personal preferences that come I to play

Great video as always! I nearly applied for MW this year but decided I needed another year in the business to prepare. It looks absolutely terrifying!! I can only imagine how it feels to get that phone call! And great call on the magnum of Alfred Gratien!

Great story. My first wine tasting was back in 2001 at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk CT. Went with some friends who were already fairly knowledgeable. They talked me in to buying a bottle of 1996 Chateau Lynch Bages. Never spent $80 for a bottle of wine before and honestly thought it was crazy. That was my first taste and I’ve been hooked ever since. Also while there bought a set of Nachtmann Bordeaux stems and still have three.
