This was truely 40 years ahead of it's time. The color grading, the effects, this trailer, everything. Stanley Kubrick was definitely a visionary. RIP

And these are the actual images as shot in the mid 60s. No CGI... just a film director who spend most of the production period researching and developing how to make it look as authentic as possible and absolutely refused to settle for less than perfection. Kubrick... the best ever! Before 2001, space ships were designed for movies by the FX people. Kubrick got engineers from NASA to design the ships. Before this film, a space ship set was designed and built by normal set designers. Kubrick got IBM to advise him on tablet computers and web cams, decades before they became real. And he had the set for the Discovery built by an aircraft corporation. It was a real centrifuge which rotated as the actors walked around it. It cost $150, 000 in 60s money, about $1.5 million today... for ONE set! And his FX crew experimented for two or three years to develop FX shots. An astonishing step forward for the film industry. Star Wars, a decade later, was upgraded with CGI for its 20th anniversary re-release in 1997. 2001 A Space Odyssey needs no CGI enhancements. George Lucas acknowledged it as a masterpiece.

I saw this movie at the drive-in in the summer of 1968, when I was all of nine years old. To this day it remains my favorite movie of all time.

This movie is beyond anything cinema has to offer. Because it is a monolith, where the monolith in the movie made apes use tools, made man go to space, this movie by the interpretation of so many people lead to new movies and different other things it has influenced. A true masterpiece!

The visuals look so good it could have been released in the late 90 or 2000s. The film is a true masterpiece

I refuse to believe that this is the original 1968 trailer. I thought this was a late 80s early 90s trailer when I first saw it. But if it was the original I'am impressed

I've watched this movie last night for the first time, 51 years after it was released. Any one else this year?

so beautiful. in my opinion, the most important film ever made. ahead of its time, terrifying, and profound, even 40 years down the line.

I just found out this came out in 68... Before we landed on the moon. And I can't believe how advanced this story and tech was. It is actually shocking how well done and forward looking it was. How clean the video is.

I just can’t believe how ahead of it’s time this was. It’s mind blowing. They predicted video calling, AI, tanning booths and all sorts of stuff. The FX are just stunning for the time.

I was amazed when my teacher told me that Arthur Clarke had written this science fiction story before traveling to space!
What an imaginative writer!

Kubrick films are characterized by maximum value. Memorable performances from most of a large cast (A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove), or maximum effect from relatively small casts (The Shining, 2001: A Space Odessey). He's the gold standard for cast commitment and fuel efficiency.

Production Design, Cinematography and authenticity. Half a century ahead of it's time. Great film making in it's purest form.
