2018 was the 50th anniversary of this famous scene, and it inspired the similar waltz sequence in 'First Man'. It seems such an obvious fit to put waltz music together with scenes of beauty and weightlessness, which underscores what a stroke of genius it was back then.

"An der schönen, blauen Donau, op. 314 (The Blue Danube)", composed by Johann Strauss in 1866. Performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Herbert von Karajan.

Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Written by Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick. Starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester and Douglas Rain.

This scene is almost 55 years old and it’s still impressive. Stanley Kubrick was a genius

I'm still impressed by the floating pen, still can't see any flaws of this 50-year-old visual trickery

It's a waltz in space.

Every frame of this movie is a masterpiece.

This is, without doubt, one of the greatest movies ever made. This sequence straight after the humanoid ape throws a bone up in the air is as Arther C Clarke says the longest flash-forward in movie history, about three million years. Kubrick's inspirational use of music in the film is brilliantly exemplified here. What genius he was.

Always loved how Star Wars gave a wink at this movie by including the illuminated docking entry. There would be no Star Wars without Space Odyssey. Love both.

I saw this in a Cinerama theater in 1968. OMG, this scene had everyone in the theater mesmerized! I remember as a 12 year old walking out of the theater in a daze.

If some day space flight becomes part of our daily lives, I'll put this track on my first trip to the moon.

Wow, this scene is a fucking masterpiece! One of the best scenes in the history of cinema. Kubrick was a genius, and each of his films are spectacular, but this one is on another level! Just magnificent.

In 1968: in 2001 we will have space travel be as normal as an intercontinental flight
In 2019: the earth is flat, raid area 51, the moon landing is fake, corona ...

Even though this was 1969, the sets still look futuristic compared to the latest StarTrek .

Mindblowing in 1968. Mindblowing now.

Never has a scene and soundtrack gone better together.

I won't lie, seeing this for the first time made me a little misty-eyed. Just thinking of our potential as a species, how far we've come, how much further we can still go. It's a privilege to be a part of this adventure, no matter how small a part or for however short a time.
