2001: ahead of its time in 1968. 2001: ahead of its time in 2015.

A pure classic.

I saw this in a theatre in London when it was first released. It blew my mind. Can you imagine the impact this had on us in 1968?

This movie wasn't even nominated for best picture of the year award. Now let that sink in for a moment.

It's amazing to think that this movie was actually made before we went to the moon.

One of the best movies ever...
Not just for the images, sound, etc.

But because when you see it, you keep thinking about it and wondering things for weeks or even years.
The movies they make these days, you forget them right away in the credits...

I had the opportunity to see this film during it's original release film run in 1969. I was 12 years old and this movie simply awed me beyond belief. It WAS the spark in my life that set me on the path and interests I have. Sure, we had Star Trek on TV but this, this film changed my life. I immediately took my allowance money and bought the book, the novelization of the film to read. And after I did that, I understood a lot more about it, and I asked my mom to take me back to the theater to see it again. And again. I found and read the short story, "The Sentinal" that 2001 was based on....then I started avidly reading Clarke, then Asimov, Farmer, Heinlein, Herbert....but I always, ALWAYS came back to "2001". I bought and built the models. I followed the space program and moon landings. I was utterly astounded that a movie could be so....realistic. I absorbed all the classical music from the film as well - bought the soundtrack album and listened to it over and over and over....

“. . . Moon-Watcher felt the first faint twinges of a new and potent emotion. It was a vague and diffuse sense of
envy--of dissatisfaction with his life. He had no idea of its cause, still less of its cure; but discontent had come into his soul, and he had taken one small step toward humanity.”

“Then he [The Star Child] waited, marshaling his thoughts and brooding over his still untested powers. For though he was
master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next. But he would think of something.”

apart from being one of the best films ever made, this is a really great trailer

Amazing how everything was done with photography and practical effects.

Isaac Newton has his famous portrait painted in 1689.
Richard Strauss completes a musical masterpiece in 1896.
Stanley Kubrick renders his vision of genius to us in 1968.

And by no coincidence, the very next year, we used a law from Newton, and technology from a German who wanted to be a composer like Strauss, to do what Kubrick could only do on film, Strauss in music, and Newton on paper.

still looks better than most modern sci-fi

This is beautiful. I'd love to see it one the big screen one day.

It saddens me to think a movie like this could never be made now.  Even if another cinematic genius like Kubrick came along, no studio would ever allow a similar hands off production on an expensive and experimental film with no standard story structure like this.  The glory days of cinema are sadly far behind us most likely.

Watching this film in 1968 must've been a completely mind-melting experience... With CGI effects today anything can be faked and made to look good, but back then computer graphics and most other more modern practical effects didn't exist. I probably would've remained seated completely stunned at what I just saw, until staff kicked me out. Also, the cut from Dave floating in the computer core to Frank floating in space was a nice touch.

2001 is my absolute favourite film of all time. I understand that it's not for everyone. Some people find it boring, but if you really allow yourself to be immersed in the film, you can feel like you're on one incredible experience. No joke, the first time I saw the last 23 minutes of this film was equivalent to an out of body experience. It was absolutely incredible.

If I was kidnapped by aliens and were forced to show them only one film that shows humanity at its most self-aware, curious, artistic, expressive and existential, I'll show them this.

In my opinion, the most complete, most accomplished effort in all of cinema.

I have this movie on my DVR right now. Just watching the special affects of this film knowing that it was released in 1968 is entertainment enough. It's just hard to believe, literally, that this film is 48 years old. AMAZING cinematography, the best I've ever seen.

Interstellar is good, and is much better than your conventional, lifeless, throwaway blockbuster, but it is *NOTHING* compared to 2001. The amount of ambition in Kubrick's masterwork is simply incredible.

No mainstream director in the world would have dare to come closer to kubrik.

Remember this man has made this film in 1968 when there is no idea of youtube trailers, facebook, twitter etc .

yet 2001 emerge as great science fiction movie of all time. This cult movie its just happened. Anybody compares interstellar with this classic i really feel sorry for them.

It's difficult to believe that 2001 and A Clockwork Orange came from the same mind. Stanley was so many geniuses trapped in one man. RIP. <3
