Over 50 years old and in my opinion one of the best looking films ever made, visually stunning.
Stanley Kubrick’s dazzling, Academy Award®-winning* achievement is a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke) first visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality. “Open the pod bay doors, HAL.” Let an awesome journey unlike any other begin.

I always find it chilling how HAL pleads for his life in such a calm and measured tone. His words indicate that he is terrified beyond belief but he cannot express it in anything more than a polite monotone. So much more effective than if HAL's voice had been computer-synthesised or spoken in a kind of Dalek-esque staccato.

I love how the inside of HAL is full of red light, alluding to viscera, as if he was a living creature. This alongside his monotone pleading is truly haunting. He’s in pain.

Fun Fact: If you didn't know the song hal starts singing while he's being shutdown is called Daisy Bell it was the first song sung by a computer which was a major landmark in the advancement of technology so it makes sense that while hes being slowly degraded it starts from one of the first signs of intelligence by computers.

Wow, a machine capable of gaslighting and guilt tripping. That really is an impressive piece of technology.

It's 2022 and I'm still puzzled at how they achieved believable anti gravity effects in the 1960s without visible wires.

“yes, i’d like to hear it, Hal. play it for me.”

i can’t get enough of Dave’s palpable panic, realizing he’s killing the last sentient thing and his only remaining “friend” on the ship. from here, it’s a suicide mission. you can feel his regret and desperation through the screen. just an incredible performance

Very interesting. During HAL's final moments, his "mind" reverts to his early days. Similarly a person near death often thinks of their childhood.

I would’ve believed this movie came out today. The quality is outstanding

Dave’s respiratory sound and the hissing, plus Hal’s pleading, are sublime. Plus the fact that the only time Dave speaks is when he asks Hal to sing the song.

When Hal told Dave to take a stress pill I burst out laughing.

I love how HAL basically told Dave to take a chill pill after trying to murder him. 😂😂

This movie is over half a century old yet it looks brand new. Absolutely timeless.

The tragic story of a computerized crewmate being destroyed by guilt at not being able to divulge the true nature of their mission to his human crewmates. Unfortunately, his logic dictated that the most efficient way to alleviate himself of this guilt was to remove the humans from the equation. *_Daisy, daisy...._*

The close-up shot of HAL with no camera in the reflection at 0:50... I love it when the special effects are so good you don’t even notice or question them

The pre-CGI special effects that Kubrick put into this movie are nothing short of genius.

Also, it is about at this point where HAL realizes how pissed off Dave is, and starts soiling his virtual underwear.

The set for HAL's brain was six stories tall. There is something so utterly sad hearing HAL quietly commenting on the loss of himself. The steady slowing of his voice is truly pathetic. Kubrick's masterpiece was a watershed movie for sci-fi films. It influenced countless people from Lucas to Spielberg and Scott to Cameron.

HAL: "I can see you are very upset about this, Dave. Eat a snicker."

Hard to believe that this movie is 55 years old.

Fun fact: Douglas Rain, the voice of HAL, delivered his lines sitting down, with his bare feet resting on a pillow, in order to get as calm a voice as possible

I'm actually blown away by how fantastic the special effects are. Like, they aren't just 'good for the time', they still look incredible even by today's standards.
