The fact that this was shot in 1968 is INSANE!

"Without your space helmet Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult" I don't know what it is about that line, it's like Hal 9000 is taunting him, gives me chills every time.

I like how HAL talks in the calm monotonous voice the entire time. Even as he's being deactivated

Remember that HAL was only acting logically per his programming. It was conflicting orders from humans that led to this.

That's some wonderful acting by Keir Dullea as Dave. The way he composes himself before saying "Alright HAL, I'll go in through the emergency airlock" is pure class.

Massive props to the guy who played Dave and Mr Kubrick's directing of him, not at all overacted but still extremely genuine. It would be easy if we were making or acting in this movie to have Dave scream at HAL but what they actually did was much better. Dave is such a trooper, so calm and reserved it makes sense because he's the perfect astronaut in a tense situation. How he hardly even talks to him after realising he's hostile is really admirable considering he just made him toss his dead friend into the void of space. Dench guy, dench movie.

The definition of why you never take A.I to places where you can easily die, like;
-Space
-The ocean
-30, 000 ft in the air
-Etc

Dave’s blank stare of despair as a computer tells him it could read his lips is gut wrenching

I mean, Kubrick is a genius. The tone in this scene is subtle and creepy. You as the viewer feel a million miles away from home and Kubrick knew that. He knew how to shatter you.

Anthony Hopkins’ inspiration for how he played Hannibal Lecter

Pay mind to the computer light's reflection upon Dave's face. The lights change with each reply from Dave, each realization by him that Hal is holding the upper hand. Utterly brilliant use of lighting technique in what is the greatest science fiction movie ever created.

I find this very therapeutic. Hals voice is like ASMR. Even the set and the colours give me tingles.

Douglas Rain's performance as HAL is incredible. I love that HAL in this scene is trying to convey annoyance, anger, smarm, smugness, but he can't. He can can only speak in that measured, level, Canadian-accented half-whisper. Whether HAL is "evil" is debatable; but he is one of the all-time science fiction cinema antagonists for a reason.

The fact that Hal's eye is right in front *of the frickin screen*, basically tells the audience that he's in power

Not them.

And that the screen is also a black monolith but thats just a neat lil observation

As much as I love this film, I'd love to hear an extended negotiation between Dave and HAL. Dave knowing he was screwed and HAL in the driver's seat controlling everything
