The Quickest Way to Learn a Voicing In All Keys

Once you understand this chord structure, your piano playing will never be the same. It's used commonly in both Jazz and Neo Soul, but you'll really hear it used in an absolutely gorgeous way in modern Neo Soul-Inspired tracks that cross genres as well. A really important part of this sound is the dim(maj7) chord, i.e. a diminished triad with a major 7. The structure comes down to being built like a block chord, but with a major 7 instead of a 6. Use this over any melody or chord progression for a modern sound. Enjoy this jazz and Neo Soul piano tutorial with Noah Kellman.

Love your videos, bought the NK FULL BUNDLE. Neo soul is so beautiful!
I like to say that "repetition is magic". It seems like repeating something like chord patterns won't get you anywhere but it absolutely does. Something about repetition locks in both hand (movement) memory and brain (pattern) memory. I like to go from chromatic to eventually moving around circle of 4ths.
Learning piano for me is always like this:
1) I can't do it
2) repeat it a lot
3) I can do it
The word repetition is underused and under appreciated. The word "practice" means nothing, but repetition means a lot.
The cool thing is, repetition is easy -- it may be boring, but it's not difficult.
I think this should be stressed to students because it is very empowering. If you repeat enough, you will be able to play it.

I am not a keyboardist, but your lessons are really "unlocking" this for me. Moving a voicing around chromatically, while breaking of the rhythm, arpeggiating, etc. is elegant-sounding, yet simple in concept. Thanks.

The "Mastering Real-Time Reharmonization" (Neo Jazz) and this tutorial are excellent for mastering a voicing and improvisation. Thank you Noah, hope you have a great 4th of July celebration!

It feels synchronistic that this video popped into my feed, because one of my latest obsessions has been practicing moving chord voicing up and down, but I was only practicing chromatically until this video reminded me to do other intervals, too.
This is a very nice min11 voicing! I’m already getting pretty fast at moving it around, but unlike you, Noah, I’m stretching to play the 1 5 9 with my left hand, which is mentally easier for me because then my right hand bottom note is always on the minor third of the voicing. Just a quicker neural pathway for me. I do like the fingering you use to move your left hand’s fifths up and down, though.
Wonderful video as always! Thanks, maestro!

Even as someone not overly interested in jazz, this information is so valuable just to become more and more familiar with the layout of intervals and different patterns. Fantastic content

Noah, can't thank you enough for this lesson. This is what I was talking about when I tried to suggest an idea of transposing a chord progression to every key. With this beautiful chord voicing excercise now I can easily practice either every ii V i progression or goof around with the circle of 4ths/5ths on every key, not to mention playing around with different intervals, the possibilities are endless. Thank you SO MUCH!

Why don't they show this at school?! They spend every lesson on classical theory. It was drilled into me relentlessly. Nobody ever showed me this. This is another theory in itself and fascinating.
