Oh I hope she’s recovered from that pollen. Affinity is my favourite of Sarah Waters books so far. She had a right old rummage and shop didn’t she!

Oh Louise the shadow King is incredible. It has some of the most powerful scenes I've ever read. There is one scene which I still can't bear to think about. I wish it had a lot more press as it's amazing.
I have one Margaret Drabble on my tbr (the 7 sisters).
Also love Sarah Waters but I need to read more.

Love all the books that you have shown here...I am with you on Sarah Waters. The first book I read of hers was Fingersmith; I absolutely loved it, and now I am on a mission to read her back catalogue :) thank you for sharing :)

Thank you very much Louise ! This was a fun video. I have added The Shadow King on my TBR. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I hope you enjoyed the Queen's jubilee! Unfortunately, has we have guillotined ours, it is hard to immagine what a wonderful experience it can be !

I loved the Millstone - read it in my 20s sooo long ago! I didn't like Days of Abandonment as much as the Brilliant Friend series . OOOooo the Fifth Child is chilling - as I remember. So nice to see older/retro books - hope you enjoy them. I read lots of Margaret Drabble in the early 70s and have not revisited her - must try and see if I still like her - or whether it was a more youthful thing.

I do enjoy a book haul. I love having a look through second hand bookshops. I have to limit myself going in because I really do have enough books 🙈 I have Affinity on my tbr shelves. I've loved everything I've read by Sarah Waters so far.

I have the Shadow King on my shelves to read. Thanks for motivating me. Loved all of Doris Lessing books so real and some based in the 1960's and have read several of Joyce Carol Oates books. Marilyn was fantastic.

Love Sarah Waters! Affinity is my favourite of hers and I think the intrigue and resolution are better there than in Fingersmith. Hope you enjoy all of these books!

Bless you Louise! Thank you for your May Book Haul, I always look forward to your list...I love Sarah Waters! I have read everything she's written and seen her at book festivals. She creates atmosphere like no other author I've read, and I don't usually like historical fiction.

I like the early Margaret Drabble novels for their exploration of characters' inner worlds and their relationships to family and friends. A Summer Birdcage, listed on the back of your copy of The Millstone, is a favourite.

I really want to read Joyce Carol Oates too, she’s been on my list of authors to read for ages and I’ve still not got round to her. Hope you enjoy!

Affinity is my favourite Sarah Waters book, I much prefer those covers than the modern ones.

i was graduating from college when you were busy being born and lessing, drabble and oates were among the chief writers forming my early adult years.

I read the Drabble novel studying English many years ago. I remember enjoying it a lot! I was born 65 aswell and have also a son called Simon 😍. He’s younger than your Simon, born 94. I don’t know if it’s interesting ...

I really liked Days of Abandonment. The Millstone was one of my favourite and first Drabble novel I read. She was always one of my best reads. I agree so much re lovely looking books that are tactile and good to look at. Do read The Grass is Singing by Doris Lessing. Enjoy your haul I do love second hand bookshops

I remember really liking The Fifth Child, but I have read it a long time ago. I think Lessing wrote kind of a sequel to it later on, but I haven't read that one yet.

You just caused me to buy more books from Thriftbooks. I definitely need a book buying intervention! Love your recommendations!
