Lipid metabolism is the synthesis and breakdown of lipids in the cells, including the breakdown and storage of fats for energy and the synthesis of structural and functional lipids needed to build cell membranes. The first phase in lipid metabolism is digestion, and the second is fat absorption. Due to the hydrophobic nature of membrane lipids like triglycerides and cholesterol, lipid movement calls for specialized transport proteins called lipoproteins. Triglycerides, which are lipids, are stored in adipose tissue. A saturated or unsaturated aliphatic chain is present in fatty acids, which are carboxylic acids. This module gives medical students in India who are following the NMC CBME curriculum in-depth knowledge on lipid metabolism.
