If you want to hook a bowling ball like a professional is not that hard once we break it down into 4 simple things

First, look at the hand position at the start of the release, notice that the hand is right behind the ball and it is not on the side or above the ball. It is right behind.

Second, from that point the hand starts to turn around to create the axis rotation to hook the ball and notice that the movement is made with their hand and it's not made with their elbow as it is the most common mistake people make.

Third, notice that the thumb comes out of the ball first in a split second and later they use their 2 middle fingers to grab and pull the ball in which case the faster you do this the more revolutions you will create.

And last but not least, notice that the follow-through is always the same to hit their target. Most people try to hook the ball with their arm, so make sure you practice these 4 things so you can start hooking the ball like the professionals

Having the ball drilled properly is the first, most important step..

Common bowling balls in alleys are not suitable for hooking due to variance in thumb holes drilled the same, one needs customised drilled ball for following this technique

The hardest part is on the wrist. Because i have a weak wrist i cant lift the ball while keeping a good form so i have to compensate by bending my elbow but then i don't generate much velocity.

I averaged around 170 in league until someone spent half an hour teaching what you’re teaching. Within two months and good amount of practice I was a scratch bowler and had a 300 game in league play. Sadly, I got busy doing other things and never played after that year 25 years ago.

Biggest thing above and beyond anything else is to cup the hand/wrist from the start. It’s hard to see bowlers doing it, but anyone with a hook (especially if their thumb is in) is starting from a cupped position. Also, watch any of the bowlers release here, you will see a slight bend in the elbow on the downswing which quickly straightens out at release point (which is when the thumb comes out). Knowing all of these mechanics, I still struggle to get high revs myself… it’s a work in progress.

Just got into bowling 4 months ago. A pro shop suggested an Ebonite Fireball for my first ball. For a month straight I tried understanding this release and that ball will not hook at all. Yes… I know it has to be me.

After a month I went to one hand no thumb and my average shot up. I bowled my PB 243 last night.

Would I like to know how to bowl the traditional way? Yes. But this way feels so comfortable and natural I think I will stick to it.

Good video though. Very thorough in your explanation. 👍

If you notice the pinky is higher up on the ball than the fore finger. This means that the wrist is tilted towards your foot.

Step 3. You do not use your fingers to grab and pull the ball. Don't do that. The rotation comes from the thumb coming out and then the fingers.

I’ve learned to do this almost effortlessly and get strikes but I know there’s gotta be different varieties of hooks to bowling but I just can throw mine down the middle and have it ride the right outside gutter and it comes back in the middle for the strike everytime

I am always told I have a higher rev rate than I think but it doesn't matter because I throw 19.5 mph average without forcing the ball, completely relaxed. I still play up 5 with reactive

This is a good explanation, but it doesn't mention that you absolutely have to develop the finger, hand and wrist strength to turn the ball like the guys in the video. You also need the technique, but "just anyone" can't do what the bowler in the video is doing simply by learning the release. The average person can't possibly turn the ball like this pro is doing without some serious work.

Thank you… this was one of the best videos on this topic I have found. I have been struggling with this for a while.
