Should I dropout of High School? | What I learned

When you're growing up you can feel lost and it can be hard to make big decisions about your life, it's even harder when your teachers have been making your decisions for you since you were in kindergarten. We don't hear too often from successful people telling us that high school is pointless or that high school is dumb but after a little digging I found out that famous millionaires like Jay Z, Quentin Tarantino, Billie Joel, Walt Disney, and Richard Branson never graduated high school. As well as how Elon Musk, Garry Vee, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, and Steve Jobs never graduated college. If you're 15, 16, 17, or 18 years old and thinking of dropping out whether it's because of hardships or because of aspirations to get a better job or make your life better and increase your happiness, I hope my experience can show you one path and help you find your way.

This was one of the videos i watched just before dropping out into my first semester of senior year in 2022. Well worth my time, energy, commeitment to my business and most importantly mental health, really my overall wellbeing. i just needed some sort of light at the end of the tunnel. This was some of that light for sure

You can tell how bad the education system is if almost everyone in it wants to leave and finds it useless

The “on repeat” is so real, always felt like my day was the same cycle over and over

I am a sophomore in high school and every single day I have overwhelming feelings of stress and anxiety. I am holding back tears with every muscle in my body every time I am at school. I even started crying to my teacher in my last period today and the only thing he suggested was to help me during advisory. I want to drop out or just cheat my way through high school. I don't even think I can go to collage because of how horrible I feel when at school. I honestly don't think collage would be any different. Tbh I have no idea what I am doing with my life. All I know is mental health is FIRST and way more important than school will ever be. I'm pretty sure I am just going to try to cheat my way through online high school. I told my parents about it just now and I just hope they won't argue about my decision later.

As a college community graduate do it. School is literally killing your mind. There so many ways to make money online now I can name like over 50 jobs done online and even more if I add remote work.

I can relate. I dropped out of my s**thole of a high school many years ago. It was an angry place run by angry people that shoved worthless classes down your throat that had no relevance to real life. There is no more demoralizing feeling than sitting in class after class, day after day, knowing those subjects would never help you in real life and knowing you're going to fail anyway. After my escape from high school, I graduated from college and law school, and I enjoyed the ride. For me, high school was a daily exercise in hopelessness. F**K HIGH SCHOOL (and my high school was Brooklyn Tech)!!!

Getting my GED was one of the best decisions I ever made in 2001.

i’m currently 16, turning 17 this august. I’m just completely burnt out academically. I have dreams of working in EMS someday and have considered dropping out multiple times only to be told I was lazy, useless, and that i would never make it in life. I desperately want to drop out and get my CNA later this year so I have something to get me started in the medical field. Then at 18 earning my GED so Im eligible for EMS courses in my state.

This video was one of the best things I’ve ever seen! I technically did graduate high school in January 2019, but had I not been able to, I would have dropped out to! I also distanced myself with the schools of my 2nd town as I’m not a fan of the mistreatment I received from students and higher ups at those schools compared to the loving environment I had going to my grade school in my hometown. I also skipped my graduation and went to my hometown one instead to see my friends graduate as the guest of honor. To this day I still have no physical high school diploma, but I am graduating college this fall with a 1 year degree in hospitality, while also working as an actress appearing in films that are on YouTube and some that even made it to theaters! Thanks so much for sharing your story with us and for making feel valid for leaving high school to! 😊

But what about those with no supportive parents?
I don't live in the US so we don't have a GED. However instead of GED we have something called a BTP but in order to go to take BTP classes school for you obviously need your parents to pay for the funds since nothing in this country is free. Last night I told my dad that I'm done with highschool and not finishing my senior year and that I instead could take BTP classes and then another diploma called a BTS and then I go to college and that I know I won't even be able to graduate to which he yelled "You don't anything". And now I literally have no idea what to do. I would much rather find a job and move out and pay for my own funds or even take a loan and study the BTP and BTS but in the country that I live in (Tunisia) that would be a challenge, a very hard challenge.
And I'm not sure anyone in my family is being supportive of me and now I literally have no idea what I'm gonna do with my life. I'm so overwhelmed because so many things concerning my future have happened in the course of a two day span and I can't possibly handle it because I've already got a troubled mind. And what makes me even more sad is that almost all my friends are getting their future set up by their supportive families and there I am, about to be left alone in the town with most of my friends skipping it and moving out. Excuse my language but what the fuck am I supposed to do?
And I'm sorry if I talked about a lot of shit, obviously I just wanted to open up and your comment section seemed like a good place for it.

Ps. If there is any wrong grammar it's because English isn't my first language, it's not even my second language, it's my third language.

As someone who has recently got her high school diploma i would like to include my own two cents.

In middle school i wanted so bad to drop out, when i was in freshman year i asked my math teacher, "why are we learning stuff that we won't need outside of school?" She responded with, "Because your brain is learning to critically think and process information even if you don't remember this stuff after high school as well as you're learning how to learn (i don't fully remember what she said sorry ^^')" That resonated with me and motivated me to finishing.
I do agree that everyone has different paths and there are many options. My choice of finishing is entirely my own personal choice and i would recommend completing a diploma if you can, but i think you and your brother made a good choice based on your personal struggles; i'm proud that you both got your GED's. I hope you two both enjoy yours lives, play the sports you want to, and live out your ambitious dreams <3
P.s to your peers that said it was stupid for not walking the stage for your diploma, personally that's overrated. Covid didn't give me a proper ceremony and most of the ceremony i felt uncomfortable and would've prefer no ceremony. To me it felt fake because everyone felt like strangers. Celebrate small achievements with people you love instead of big achievements with strangers. I can tell you it feels much better that way :D

Got to say though, the social aspect of school is amazing. The communication skills you acquire and ability to form bonds…. Makes it well worth sticking to high school. I nearly dropped out. Stuck with it for my parents. The education was useless, but what you are able to teach yourself, with highschool, makes it worth it.— Graduated 2021

Just rough it out and finish high school. Life is tough enough with just a diploma. School is easy just pay attention and do the work.

Its very frustrating to know that millions of people are continuing to be told that we need school specifically high school and college despite the facts that the majority of info the we get during our school years will never be used again. Thank you for this, I felt lost I needed someone who has had personal experience of what it is like to drop out of school and instead pursure the GED. I will be getting my GED too, eventually. Thx I really needed some encouragement.❤❤❤

Thank you for this. I was currently making near equal of the amount some of my teachers made and soon, I will try to make maybe double. This helped me out a lot thank you.
