You know what's raally stupid? You can defy Maxon's orders every step of the way while progressing through the BoS storyline and he will STILL make you Sentinel. Infiltrate the Institute then free the synths at Bunker Hill, kill Dr. Li and get banished from the Institute, and refuse to kill Paladin Danse when ordered. Maxon is just "disappointed" in your betrayal but hey, you still deserve that shiny promotion!

How would he even know? Does the BoS have a spy in the Institute? One would think that what happens in the Institute stays in the Institute, and Captain Coat would be none the wiser.

I wish there was more functionality with disrupting the Institute. Like you could stealth kill someone important and it would effect all of the factions they contribute to without you necessarily become enemies with the faction.

Well, yeah, you do end up failing all Institute quests when you kill anyone within the Institute besides rogue synths, and having to fight your way out for as well.
