The painless way to start a sketchbook #shorts

I always fill the first two or three pages with favorite quotes, disclaimers, and the like. I figured that's as good a way to get started as any.

I always start in the middle because if someone opens it and sees nothing on the first page they might not bother to look any further.

You can always glue a new work on top or start with a collage of doodles you've done on scrap papers and the sort that you like and add some new colours or text with them

Or you could just keep a rough sketchbook alongside and do some “Warm-up Sketches” for 25 to 30 minutes and when the hand is set into its groove and knows what it has to do and when you think upcoming errors are now minimal then open up that sketchbook = )

You might want to date it, however, if you start in the middle or at the back. Otherwise, it is hard to see how much your drawing skills have progressed. That's a major reason starting on the first page is a good idea. If it is fear of that first page, then scribble squiggles, circles, lines, etc., on it, and the next 10-20, or even the whole book, or next 20 sketch books. Whatever gets you relaxed and starting to draw. :)

It's fun to start the first page with an intentional coffee or tea spill. Then doodle around it a bit, or write a good quote. Ice broken.
