it's called the brushtail possum not the bushtail possum, because it's tail is only furry on one side like a big brush. there's also an American possum called the bushy tail opossum which has a fluffy tail like a racoon.

They aren’t closely related outside of them both being marsupials. Marsupials however are a very large diverse group and Opossums and Possums are two different families. A world apart as well of course quite literally.

*As an Australian it is a bit exhausting for people to call opossums "possums", it gets confusing to explain the difference every time I talk about possums ^^;;;

The O is technically supposed to be pronounced, as the animal's name comes from Northeast Native American languages, Algonquian, Abenaki, and Iroquoian. In most Abenaki it's Wpossom/Ooppssum, pronounced with a double O
