My daughter rescued several opossum babies from a dead mama-possum some years ago. She raised them for about a year and soft released them with the help of a rehabilitator. Of the three, she kept one, the one with a damaged eye who wouldn't have survived in the wild. He was affectionate toward her and very tame toward other people.

Fun facts: oppossums have more teeth than any other land mammal and hiss when frightened, but rarely ever attempt to bite. They're more frightened of you than you are of them! So, please be kind to our little nocturnal animal oddity 🥰

I have a new understanding and admiration for these little furr balls they are welcome in the yard and they visit when we cook outside, I think they laugh at me 😁🤣 and my cooking !!!

I feed wild possums and raccoons from my porch at night. The possums are much calmer and more civil with each other than the raccoons. I live in a remote area with lots of insects, especially ticks. Since the possums have started frequenting my property, I can mow grass without being covered in ticks.

Also possums cant get rabies there are obvious exceptions in genetic mutation but generally speaking possums have a body temperature so low it can not allow the virus to take hold.

I got the nickname Ellie Mae the critter catcher at my last job because of a opossum . A big female got in the hallway. I picked her up by the tail and she went limp . She was huge, I’m little, I had to use 2 hands to carry her . To many other employees were now watching in amazement 🤣🤣🤣they are docile animals and I grew up on a farm 🤷‍♀️she was out in the day because she got stuck up on the landing and they get up there and can’t figure out how to get back down. She was stressed and hissing . As soon as I grabbed it’s tail it went limp . There was a wooded spot in the middle of the buildings ( apartment complex), I carried to the woods and layed her down and walked away. I love critters 🥰💕

One evening Our Cat stayed out later than normal ( She'd normally not wonder from the backyard and would come in once the sun would go down ) I went outside to find her cuddled up with a Possum ❤

Great animals to have around the yard. They eat things we don’t like including ticks. Just be careful as dogs don’t like them in their territory.

I raised a male from a mouse-sized youngster; easily one of the most interesting and rewarding animal experiences I've ever had. Grew up to almost 15 lbs with inch long canines, and to this day is the largest I've ever seen.
