chewy spicy tteok-bokki at home

rice cakes: (inspired by @cafemaddy)

1/4 cup hot water
pinch of salt

- mix roughly till temperature is manageable
- knead with hands into a smooth soft dough
- spread sesame oil on a surface
- roll the dough into logs
- cut them and add to boiling water to boil for 3 min or till they float to the top
- transfer to ice cold water

sauce:
boiling water
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp brown sugar

- simmer for a couple of minutes till the sauce is thick
- add rice cakes and cook for 2 more minutes before serving with sesame seeds and green onions (if you have)

this is probably one of my most fav things i have ever made no joke

When you only have water and sugar
"Let's make sugar syrup" 😢

any substitute for gochujang and gochugaru?
[edit] guys i found it myself after a little digging.. gochugaru is easily replacable by chilli flakes, [gochugaru is basically mildly spicy chilli powder], for gochujang, put 2-3 kashmiri dried chillies or any dried chilli you have in hot water for 10-15 mins and blend it with 1tbsp sugar, salt, garlic and some soy sauce. hope this helps

This recipe without the sauce is similar to a dish called Fara, popular in Bihar, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh. Another preparation of this is done with dal /aloo stuffing, also called pittha, but the other one is made similarly like this 🥰

Just a suggestion I also tried this at home and it turned out awesome but for the last part when you add sesame seeds just roast them beforehand and then garnish, it gives that enhancing flavor and also eating raw sesame seeds can be little hard for digestion and it produces lot of body heat so it can also gives you mouth ulcers and heat boils .So it's both way better for taste and for body to roast sesame seeds not to much to make them brown but a little bet to get them a roasted flavour

tried it, the ricecakes itself was raw despite boiling & even kneading the dough with hot water. ig i need to get the glutinous rice flour instead of the regular one which i learned after i read the comments, the flavour was good tho

Recently purchased gochujjang from a korean grocery store solely to make tteokbokki. Came across your video and I made this today. It turned out great, given the ingredients I had at home. The sauce was so good. I'll order glutinous rice flour online and try it again. Thanks once again, now I don't have to spend money on overpriced tteokbokki from restaurants.

Guys you cannot replace gochujang with any other ingredient because it is fermented and add very different flavour which completely changes the dish but if you don't have it, you can make different sauce which is not going to be same but still delicious, i use to add smoked garlic and red chilli turn it into paste then add more garlic in oil add this chilli garlic paste add some soy sauce, Schezwan sauce, sugar, ketchup, any other sauce of choice, then add little bit of water and let it cook for few minutes, then add your rice cake and then again cook for five minutes, before taking off the heat add some cheese, sesame seeds and enjoy

That look's absolutely tempting😮❤😋and hiii shivangi as I even said before how your what I eat in a week videos had clips of shorts which we had already watched wasn't as interesting. So I wanted to recommend you to make more of what I eat in a day videos because filming foods you eat in just one day is much more easier than to film for a whole freaking week so this idea might help and it would also make us happy bcz we love your what i eat in a day as much as we do your what i eat in a week and I suggest you add more and more clips of kookie in between bcz I just love her she is extremely adorable so I'd like to see more of her in your videos .
Love you <37

Do remember the rice flour she used Isn’t any regualar one, if you make rice cakes with regular riceflour like me, it will be very hard..I did hear that making it with warm water softens it, but I don’t really blv it. Try to make the rice cakes with cooked rice.
