💎 Windows Defender VS TotalAV VS Bitdefender 💎

All antivirus providers have solid reputations. When it comes to general activities, the basics are there, like device scanning. A huge consideration for me is real-time protection, which all providers have for free, excluding TotalAV’s free plan. Real-time protection is absolutely vital, making sure that your antivirus doesn’t just remove threats that are already on your system but protects day-in and day-out. On the topic of additional protection, TotalAv is lacking another important part of the puzzle, additional ransomware protection. Did you know that the global total of ransomware attacks in the first four months of this year, matched half of last year's whole total? That’s mad, and that’s why good protection is more important than ever. Windows Defender and Bitdefender free both have a stripped-back version of this.

In terms of security, I will say Windows Defender does have a bit more to offer here, with a firewall, isolated browser, and even parental controls. Whilst there isn’t much difference between Windows 10 and 11 versions, the latter has an additional feature - to see protection history.
Also to use some features you have to sign in to Microsoft account. This is super annoying, and for privacy-focused users, might be a put-off.

❓ Does Windows Defender has good enough security?

Now, starting with the Windows Defender test, on Windows 10, I will say here is where you get the best firewall, it blocked all malware I tried to download so I actually had to disable it for the test. Having said that, when using Windows 11 I found this feature completely useless, I was able to download zero-day threats, despite this being enabled. Alarmingly, when I did a full scan, not a single piece of planted malware was detected, with Windows 10 or 11 versions. Hardly the best free antivirus 2022 option, wouldn’t you agree?

Surprisingly, TotalAV for Windows 11 found all 10 threats, which is surprising because there’s no firewall or real-time protection. Compared to the other two, this provider has the fastest quick scans; under a minute. And the full scan was speedy too, around 5 minutes. Good going, but my average CPU load here wasn’t terrible but also wasn’t the best, with an 86% average.

Here’s where Bitdefender for Windows 11 really surprised me. Not only did they use fewer system resources than both providers, averaging 55% CPU usage. The full scan also took the same amount of time as Windows Defender, yet, caught more threats - 8/10 planted zero-day malware was detected.

I used windows defender for almost a decade now, I haven't had any issues with it ever since windows 10. especially when I update my o.s. to windows 11 it's been a very good av to me and with my clients.

A full scan for defender takes a lot longer than five minutes, it can take over an hour if you have a lot of files so i query if the scan even completed or if the quick scan wasn't used instead?

I have windows defender activated on my win 10 laptop and now win 11, no issues at all. I have had no threats, I'm just very careful not to download things I shouldn't be. No issues with windows defender, Im loving it

Windows defender might be free but it would be in microsofts best interest to protect its own platform i would assume. I have not had a single virus or other malwares in over a decade

What I wish is that these antivirus softwares would ping the ip address and record them to turn over to the authorities when a virus tries to get into your system.

I've used several free anti-virus programs and all of them significantly slowed my computer. I now use Windows defender and my computer is much faster.

I had Bitdefender for five years all it did was slow down my PC on start up. Cancelled my renewal subscription and now using windows defender, my PC starts up quick. The only issues I may have is windows updates slows down the PC when downloading updates. I haven't used a paid antivirus since March, I'm happy, I didn't sign up with any other anti virus provider. As long you have a good VPN you should be good.
